Lakers Rumors: Acquiring Ramon Sessions Would Be LA's Best Option at Point Guard

There has been a lot of speculation regarding the Los Angeles Lakers' interest in trading for Boston Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo, but the best move for the Lakers in the short term would be to make a play for Cleveland Cavaliers point man Ramon Sessions.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports, the Lakers have been in discussions with the Cavs to acquire the backup guard. Gilbert Arenas and Morris Peterson are both rumored to be potential free-agent signings, but Sessions is substantially younger than both and would likely make a bigger impact.

While it would likely take forward Pau Gasol and more to pry Rondo away from the Celtics, Sessions would cost much less. There hasn't really been any indication as to what Cleveland would be looking for in return, but Los Angeles could afford to take on Sessions' $4.3 million salary thanks to an $8.9 million trade exception gained by dealing forward Lamar Odom to the Dallas Mavericks.

Sessions has been scuffling a bit as of late, averaging just under 10 points and just over five assists per game on the season, but that is because he has lost many of his minutes to rookie stud Kyrie Irving. Sessions has bounced around during his career, playing for the Cavs, Milwaukee Bucks and Minnesota Timberwolves, but he has plenty of talent.

Last year was the best of his NBA career by far, as he averaged over 13 points and five assists per game in 38 starts for the Cavaliers. The issue with Sessions has always been a lack of consistent playing time. It's strange to say that since he has generally played on downtrodden teams thus far.

The Lakers aren't hurting in any way with a 15-11 record, but they are underachieving. Right now Los Angeles has a real problem at point guard, as Derek Fisher is no longer a quality NBA starter and youngsters like Andrew Goudelock and Darius Morris can't be expected to handle the lion's share of the minutes.

Kobe Bryant has played almost his entire career with the Lakers without a legitimate point guard to help him. Because of that he has been the primary ball handler for quite some time. Even though Kobe is used to it, though, it wouldn't hurt him in the least to have a little support in the form of Sessions.

Basically, Sessions is a low-risk, high-reward acquisition. It wouldn't take a ton to get him, and even if he doesn't work out, he won't have to be with the team past next season as he only has a player option for one additional year.

Sessions could be a potential steal for the Lakers as he can handle the ball, find open shooters and get to the basket on his own. Maybe it isn't the type of move that is going to win the Lakers another championship, but I don't see any way it can hurt their chances.
