Jeremy Lin: Top Tweets, Photos and Videos as Linsanity Goes Viral
One of the best and worst things about the Internet is, whenever anyone does anything remotely interesting, they are turned into a star. New York Knicks point guard Jeremy Lin is the latest athlete to become a sensation thanks to a good three-game stretch.
How insane have things gotten with Lin since his breakout on February 4th?
Well, based on the ESPN Player Evaluator Rankings, he is the second-best player in the NBA. The only player he trails is LeBron James.
While Lin has done good things, the madness has to slow down a little bit. It has been three games against Washington, Utah and New Jersey—not exactly a murderer's row of elite competition.
Still, he has given the Knicks a much-needed spark and possibly helped save head coach Mike D'Antoni's job along the way. That kind of player deserves some intense viral attention.
So without further ado, here are the top tweets, pictures and videos from the NBA's newest sensation.
The Official Jeremy Lin Theme Song
1 of 10What better way to get things started than a music video proclaiming Lin the MVP, even though he has started only two games, and rookie of the year, even though he is in his second year.
Despite the nonsensical first line, the rest of the song is catchy and will show you why the city of New York is so taken with Lin right now.
His highlight reel is small, but you can see the raw skills he has and why he works so well in Mike D'Antoni's offense.
Listen to this and try not to hum the tune later on. Good luck.
Lin vs. Kobe, New York Post Style
2 of 10Whenever there is a good story in the Big Apple, you can always count on the New York Post to come up with some snappy headline.
In honor of tonight's Lakers-Knicks game, they came up with this doozy. It's amazing that the editors were able to make Lin look like a bigger star than Kobe Bryant.
We will finally get a good read on just how "real" Lin's emergence is against a good team. While he may not be lining up against Kobe at the start, if things get too out of hand for the Lakers early, Mike Brown could decide that he needs his best defender in Linsanity's face.
As an aside, I wonder if the Post just has someone on retainer to come up with the cheesiest possible headline.
Let's Have Another Parade in New York
3 of 10As if New York needed another ticker tape parade to celebrate after the Giants just had one—that is exactly what Eric Stangel wants for the Knicks' newest superstar.
You may scoff at the idea of this right now, but if Lin defeats Kobe and the Lakers tonight, that city is going to become covered in posters and banners with his face all over it.
With the NBA All-Star Game coming up and Lin left off the Eastern Conference roster, the city could give him a party to let them know that he is thinking of them.
Before He Was a Knick...
4 of 10Not that you would know it, because he didn't play much or make it through training camp with them, but Lin played with the Golden State Warriors last year and was cut by the Houston Rockets before the season started.
Rockets general manager Daryl Morey was asked about the "mistake" of cutting Lin on Twitter. Morey simply said that no one knew he was going to do what he is doing right now.
It is hard to argue with him. In 29 games with the Warriors last year, Lin shot 39 percent from the field and averaged less than three points per game. He didn't start once for the team.
John Wall, How Are Your Ankles?
5 of 10While it wasn't exactly Allen Iverson owning Michael Jordan on a crossover, Lin did his best to shatter John Wall's ankles—or just his spirit—in the Knicks game against the Washington Wizards on Wednesday night.
Poor John Wall. It's bad enough that he has to play in the career-draining abyss that is Washington, but now he is a viral sensation because of this play.
To be fair to the situation, Wall's teammates aren't exactly working to get in the lane and contest the dunk. There are two players standing just outside the paint who take a step in, then decide they don't care.
Jeremy Lin Is the Next Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan and LeBron James
6 of 10Earlier, we talked about the New York Post and its ability to come up with the best/worst headlines ever. That paper is not the only one in town that can play the hyperbole game.
In fact, the New York Daily News got in on the act with the article favorably comparing Lin's first two games to Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant and LeBron James:
"The previously little-used, second-year man has statistically out-performed Kobe Bryant - who comes to the Garden Friday night with the Lakers to try and slow down The Mighty Lin (r.) - LeBron James and, yes, even Michael Jordan in their first two NBA starts.
Now, maybe that is getting a little carried away, but there's a reason it is called 'Linsanity!'
"
That is, in fact, why it is called "Linsanity!" The definition of it should be, "Never let an incredibly small sample size get in the way of a good story."
We're Movin' on Up
7 of 10We all dream of living the glamorous life that professional athletes do, so it is easy to forget that not everyone is making the kind of money that Albert Pujols, Kobe Bryant and LeBron James are.
Lin's contract with the Knicks was for a lot of money, but it wasn't guaranteed. Being a practical-thinking person, he decided that it would be in his best interest to sleep on his brother's couch.
This particular photo features Lin crashing on Landry Fields' couch, which is not exactly the environment that you would expect for the newest superstar in the NBA.
Needless to say, now that his contract is going to be guaranteed, he is going to find a new place to crash with his own bed and couch.
Best of the Best Tweets
8 of 10We have touched on some good tweets about Lin already. Now, we want to give you some other favorites from various people across the country.
Greg Diener, who offers random thoughts on all things sports and pop culture, wanted to give a shout-out to the newest power college hiding all of the best athletes in this country: Harvard.
At this point, I think Harvard would much rather claim Lin than Fitzpatrick, although the Buffalo Bills quarterback was able to parlay his good four-game stretch into a fat new contract.
The Bill Walton Trip, which is not in any way associated with the Hall of Famer, knows that ESPN has finally found the perfect cure for the Tim Tebow-less spring and summer: Linsanity.
Somehow, I doubt that Lin's coverage will come anywhere close to what Tebow got. Call me when he gets his own SportsCenter special.
Bonnie Bernstein wants to start a new trend. She can feel the world latching on to "Linsanity," but what's wrong with "Linlicious"? That sounds too risque for the kids to get in on it.
Jeremy Lin and Tim Tebow Will Break the Internet
9 of 10Apparently the radio hosts at 95.7 The Game in San Francisco want to destroy the world. That is why they asked Lin about Tim Tebow.
Lin was happy to talk about the polarizing Denver Broncos quarterback, offering praise for the person he is off the field. Like Tebow, Lin is a very religious person, so that is likely where the inspiration comes from (via Pro Basketball Talk):
"Actually a lot of inspiration just because he’s such a polarizing figure but I think the things he says in interviews, his approach to the game is just unbelievable and I respect him so much. I want to be able to do some of the things that he does in terms of the amount of charity work and the non-profit work, and the way he impacts people off the field. I think that is what is most inspiring to me about him.
"
It is interesting that everyone plays up the religion aspect with Tebow, but you hear very little about with Lin. Perhaps that is just the power of the NFL, especially compared to that of the NBA.
Lin's Journey to Madison Square Garden
10 of 10Here is the summary of Jeremy Lin's NBA career so far. It details his journey from the draft through the D-League and his arrival in New York.
Though it is only four minutes, it does give you a lot more insight into everything that he went through after being drafted to getting where he is right now. Obviously, there is a lot more to the story than that, but if you want the long and short of it all, this is the video for you.
Whether this hot streak for Lin lasts or not, it is hard to root against him. He had all kinds of things working against him playing in the NBA, and now he is making the most of his opportunity.
