The Ex-Eagle Has Landed, but Who Will Take a Chance on Terrell Owens?

Mike MoraitisOct 31, 2011

Terrell Owens had a good year in 2010, flying under the radar to make 72 catches for 983 yards and nine touchdowns. He put up those numbers having missed two games on a terrible team.

Numbers like those prove T.O. could still help a contending team at this stage in his career.

The question has never been his ability on the field, but his ability to be a good teammate and not destroy a team.

Putting all that aside, here are 10 playoff teams who could benefit from T.O.'s services.

Possible Homecoming: Buffalo Bills

1 of 11

I know, I know. The Buffalo Bills have been down this road before and, as do most situations with Terrell Owens, it didn't end well.

Owens had one of his worst years in the NFL with the Bills, lining up for a team without a quarterback, an offense and just about everything else you need to win.

Now the Bills seemingly have their man at quarterback, Ryan Fitzpatrick, and what better way to welcome him to his new contract than to give him more options at receiver?

The Bills running game has been extremely effective this year as Fred Jackson heads the fifth-best rushing offense in the NFL.

Although the Bills passing attack is already 13th in the league, it could be better with the addition of another weapon to spread the field.

Owens would be the perfect option to do that.

Possible Homecoming: Cincinnati Bengals

2 of 11

Another situation that's hard to imagine is Owens returning to the Cincinnati Bengals this season.

The only thing that makes me think this is possible is the fact that Owens still had a near Pro Bowl year despite his season being cut short due to injury.

The Bengals are serious contenders for a 2011 playoff run at 5-2 in the AFC North. They've been mainly successful with their defense. On the offensive side of the ball, the Bengals are ranked 21st in the league passing and running the ball.

Those aren't numbers the Bengals can sustain if they hope to see the playoffs. They will need more production from their offense and Owens could help them with that.

Rookie A.J. Green is having a very nice season, but without a track record, Cincinnati could use a more reliable option for fellow rookie, Andy Dalton, to throw to.

With T.O., the Bengals could expand their offense and it could be the move that puts them over the top in the AFC North.

Oakland Raiders

3 of 11

Carson Palmer officially took over the Oakland Raiders during Week 7 of the season, something not many people expected to happen so early.

He surely had his difficulties, throwing three interceptions in his first game with the Raiders.

Bear in mind, however, that Palmer had just joined the team earlier in the week and didn't have much time to adjust to a new offense.

So, where does Owens come in?

Adding another option for Palmer would make his job easier. Owens would help boost the 23rd-ranked pass offense in football.

Not to mention, Palmer connected with T.O. enough in their season together with the Bengals that you would think he's pretty comfortable with Owens and that could make Palmer feel right at home in a new place.

Washington Redskins

4 of 11

The Washington Redskins are 3-4 this season and in third place in the NFC East where the first-place team, the New York Giants, are 5-2.

The 'Skins are still in position to make the playoffs, despite how unrealistic that may sound.

Santana Moss, the Redskins' best receiver, recently went down with an injury and may miss another two to three weeks.

Even if he returns early, he may not be 100 percent when he gets back. After all, it is a hand injury and those are pretty important for wide receivers.

Besides, John Beck is having enough trouble as it is, he could use the help T.O. could provide in giving him a No. 1 receiver. When Moss returns, Beck will have even more options which couldn't hurt an inexperienced quarterback like him.

Detroit Lions

5 of 11

The Detroit Lions have been a pleasant surprise in the NFL this season and could make the playoffs for the first time in a decade.

Calvin Johnson is having a monster year in 2011, but despite that, the Lions could use another option through the air.

Matthew Stafford's second favorite option is his tight end and his third is his running back.

Clearly another receiver couldn't hurt and would open up more options for Stafford. Owens would thrive having one of the best receivers in the league lining up across the field from him.

Defenses would be so consumed with stopping Johnson using double teams, Owens would get plenty of open looks and would be an upgrade to any receiver in the same position.

Besides, you can never give a young quarterback too many receiver to throw to.

Kansas City Chiefs

6 of 11

After a 23-20 win against the San Diego Chargers on Monday Night Football, the Kansas City Chiefs have now won four in a row and are in first place in the AFC West.

All this after starting 0-3 this season.

Matt Cassel and the Chiefs can't expect to go far with the 30th-ranked pass offense in the league. Steve Breaston hasn't provided the production the Chiefs thought they'd be getting with Breaston as their No. 2.

Enter T.O.

Owens could help take pressure off both Breaston and Dwayne Bowe. He could also thrive from having two dangerous weapons lining up with him in a three- or four-receiver set.

The possibilities for Owens are positive in this situation and, in turn, could help make the Chiefs a better passing team and a playoff reality this season.

Tennessee Titans

7 of 11

When Kenny Britt suffered a torn ACL, ending his season, Matt Hasselbeck and the Tennessee Titans lost their best wide receiver.

Still, the Titans find themselves in second place and a single win behind the Houston Texans.

The only way I see Tennessee being able to replace the kind of production Britt can give would be to sign Owens.

He's the type of receiver that commands attention, opening up the field for Hasselbeck's other options.

Especially with Chris Johnson and the Titans running game unable to get it going, the Titans could use another receiver to help them gain yards.

T.O. has been gaining yards and scoring touchdowns his entire career and would be the perfect man for the job.

New England Patriots

8 of 11

Where the hell is Chad Ochocinco?

Normally you hear more from the Patriots receiver, but this year, it seems we haven't heard a peep. Not sure what goes on there, but it certainly hasn't been the season the Patriots expected.

Still, the Pats are doing fine and will almost certainly return to the playoffs this season.

That being said, we saw what can happen when a physical team like the Pittsburgh Steelers lays a beat down on your receivers.

The Pats could use a big, strong, physical receiver like Owens to counter a physical defense like Pittsburgh's in the playoffs. Owens would be a big difference from some of the smaller receivers New England has.

Brady would get Owens the ball much like everyone thought he would be getting the ball to Chad Ochocinco. Since that hasn't worked out for Brady, Owens could very well step in to actually be successful in the same role.

However, this won't happen. Bill Belichick surely has enough of a headache with Ochocinco sitting on the bench. Just imagine what adding an unhappy T.O. to the equation would do.

Baltimore Ravens

9 of 11

Anquan Boldin has been somewhat of a disappointment for the Baltimore Ravens this season. Having only two games over 100 yards receiving and two touchdowns, Boldin is still the Ravens' No. 1 option.

Ray Rice may be a running back with great hands, but last year he was the Ravens fourth best option through the air. This year, he's their second.

The Ravens are missing the presence of Derrick Mason, their second-best receiver in 2010. Owens big frame would be the perfect replacement for Mason and could give Baltimore the production it lost.

He could benefit from being the second-best receiver on the team and would excel with the attention on Boldin. If Owens can quickly gain credibility with NFL defenses, Boldin would get more open looks.

Boldin's best years of his career were when he had another top receiver lining up with him. Not to say Owens is Larry Fitzgerald, but he is much more of a threat than what the Ravens already have.

Houston Texans

10 of 11

Don't look now, but the Houston Texans are 5-3 and in first place in the AFC South.

I feel like they're the best fit for Owens, mainly because they have no track record with the future Hall of Famer.

Matt Schaub's best receiver, Andre Johnson, has been hurt since Week 4 with a hamstring injury. Hamstrings are always tricky and it could be another week or two until Johnson is full speed.

Even if he returns next week, the Texans could use an expansion of Schaub's options considering his top receiver in 2011 is his tight end and after Johnson, it's Arian Foster.

Owens could immediately be Schaub's second or third option, creating matchup nightmares for opposing defenses. He would be a nice ace in the hole for a possible playoff team, adding some much-needed experience to a young Houston team.

The worst ranking the Texans have is their passing game and adding Owens would give their offense more weapons and, most likely, more success.

If All Else Fails: Chicago Rush (AFL)

11 of 11

Although interest in Owens has been quiet until this point, he has been offered a contract to play football.

The Chicago Rush of the Arena Football League are the only team to offer T.O. a contract. Owens would suit up for the Rush in March of 2012 if he accepts.

That would be a desperate, last ditch effort to get back on a football field.

It's amazing how far he's fallen. If no NFL team signs him, it would be an indicator that T.O.'s constant negative, team-killing attitude has finally caught up to him.

It would be a disappointing and embarrassing ending to a Hall of Fame career.

Owens is undoubtedly one of the best wide receivers to put on the pads, but all that doesn't matter if you're one of the worst teammates ever to put on the pads.
