Kansas City Chiefs Free Agency: Steve Smith and the 10 Best Free Agent Fits
The Kansas City Chiefs headed into the '11 offseason knowing that they had much to do in order to improve their current roster.
In last month's NFL draft, KC did just that, as they added five potential starters for the '11 season while upgrading the level of talent throughout the team.
Now the Chiefs will turn their attention to the free agent market in order to fill needs that were either addressed lightly or not at all during the draft.
With the Chiefs still having several needs, including WR, OT and RB, I have compiled the following list of the 10 best free agents that could fit these specific needs and others as well when the free agency period eventually begins.
Enjoy.
WR Steve Breaston
1 of 10
Easily one of the speediest receivers in this year's free agent class, Steve Breaston would make one of the fastest offensive units in the league even faster.
Chiefs head coach Todd Haley already has connections to Breaston, as he used to be the offensive coordinator for the Cardinals from '07 to '08.
The only concern with Breason is his durability, as he has yet to play a full season in his four-year NFL career due to injuries.
LT Tyson Clabo
2 of 10
The former Wake Forest star lineman has been one of the best underdog stories for an offensive tackle in recent NFL memory.
He went undrafted in 2004, and after playing for four different teams, he was named a Pro Bowl selection in 2010.
With right tackle arguably being the biggest need on the Chiefs line at this time, Clabo could come in and provide excellent play at that position for this coming season and beyond.
RT Jammal Brown
3 of 10
The two-time Pro-Bowl selection has had a very productive career playing for both the New Orleans Saints and Washington Redskins.
His addition would bring consistency to the RT position, a spot where the Chiefs have struggled at for years.
It would also likely signal the end of Barry Richardson's time as a starter on the right side of KC's offensive line.
ILB Stephen Tullock
4 of 10
Tullock is a very athletic linebacker that would really help the middle of the Chiefs defense.
He is a much better overall player than current starting ILB Jovan Belcher, and Tullock would really benefit by playing next to the talented Derrick Johnson.
Adding him would only make the defense a stronger unit and could put the Chiefs in the top five for rush defense in 2011.
DT Shaun Ellis
5 of 10
Even at the not so ripe age of 33 years old, Ellis would still be an upgrade over current DE starters Tyson Jackson and Glenn Dorsey.
He had 4.5 sacks last season and has shown the ability to get to the QB throughout his career, piling up 72.5 sacks over 11 NFL seasons.
Ellis also have the versatility that Chiefs GM Scott Pioli wants, as has played both DE and DT during his tenure with the Jets.
RT Willie Colon
6 of 10
Like another guy on this list, Jammal Brown, Colon would help to solidify the right side of the Chiefs O-line.
Many have rated him the best offensive lineman available in the the 2011 free agent class.
He might not be the long-term answer due to his age, but he could at least provide a strong right tackle for the next few seasons.
RB Michael Bush
7 of 10
Bush split time with Raiders starting RB Darren McFadden last season, serving as the thunder to McFadden's lightning.
He finished the campaign with 849 yards from scrimmage, including 655 yards rushing and eight TDs as well.
He is a load for any defense at 245 lbs. and would be a better option than Thomas Jones at this point both of their respective careers.
LT Matt Light
8 of 10
The longtime New England Patriots left tackle would be an immediate upgrade over current Chiefs starting LT Branden Albert.
In his 10-year NFL career, he has been selected to three different Pro Bowl teams and has done an excellent job of protecting the blind side for Future NFL Hall-of-Fame QB Tom Brady.
The only downside to Light is that he will be 33 this season, but after making the Pro Bowl last year, it's clear that Light still has many good years ahead of him.
RB Mike Tolbert
9 of 10
Tolbert would be a great change of pace back for Chiefs Pro Bowl RB Jamaal Charles.
Last year, the former Coastal Carolina star emerged as a backfield threat when he picked up 735 yards rushing and 11 touchdowns for the Chargers.
Tolbert is only just 25 years old and likely has many more years ahead of him as an NFL back.
WR Steve Smith
10 of 10
Former Giants receiver Steve Smith would add another solid weapon to the Chiefs passing attack.
He has already shown he can be a big-time receiver, as he broke out during the '09 season, hauling in 107 passes for 1,120 yards and seven touchdowns
Although he only had 529 yards receiving last season, Smith is a viable receiving threat and would be a great compliment to Pro Bowl wideout Dwayne Bowe and rookie Jonathan Baldwin.
