New York Jets Free Agency: 10 Players Jets Must Target to Guarantee Super Bowl

Brandon GalvinMay 4, 2011

Since signing Rex Ryan, the Jets have been one of the front runners in free agency for the top superstars. The team is dedicated to winning, which every fan desperately wants from their franchise.

They are building a core group of players but are always looking to bring in missing links via free agency. This year’s free agency class isn’t strong, but there are still 10 players the Jets could land to guarantee a Super Bowl victory.

Of course, they won’t land all 10 of these players, though that would be quite the haul, but if they could land a few of these free agents like they did last year, they will be the Super Bowl favorites heading into the season.

10. Matt Light, OT

Light underwent shoulder surgery this offseason but is expected to be ready for the season.

The 10-year veteran will most likely be shunned by the Patriots, especially after they selected Nate Solder in the first round.

The Jets pride themselves on running the football, which is where Light excels at this point in his career. The game is won in the trenches, which means a team can never have enough veteran offensive lineman to bolster the unit.

He would also be able to offer some insight to the Patriots as the Jets look to take the division from the Evil Empire.

9. Braylon Edwards, WR

Although he hasn’t been able to recreate his magical season as a member of the Browns, Braylon has been an important piece for the Jets.

He may not haul in every pass, but he is a deep threat with very good leaping ability.

In two years with the team, he has helped lead them to the AFC Championship. The team needs him back to once again stretch the field and hopefully put up a 16-touchdown season.

Edwards is difference maker at the wide receiver, he’s a threat whenever he’s on the field.

8. Adam Vinatieri, K

Vinatieri is the most clutch kicker of all time.

His leg is not as strong as it used to be, but he is always on point in the biggest moments. This would be a power play move by the Jets to grab the best kicker of all-time.

He’s already won a Super Bowl with two of the top teams this decade in New England and Indianapolis.

Coincidence? I think not.

He is a winner and will prove to be an integral piece when it matters most.

7. Shaun Ellis, DE

The Jets must bring back Shaun Ellis to complete their 3-4 defensive line. Although he is getting up there in age, he is still the most talented defensive end on the free agent market.

He is a team captain who deserves to be on this team when they win the Super Bowl sometime in the next few seasons.

With rookies Muhammad Wilkerson and Kenrick Ellis expected to start, Ellis would not feel the pressure of doing everything by himself.

These are two elite prospects for the Jets and would rejuvenate Ellis on defense on top of having an opportunity to win a Super Bowl.

6. Antonio Cromartie, CB

As much as I like his potential, the Jets cannot go into the season with Kyle Wilson as the No. 2 corner.

Cromartie won’t help in run support and he’s prone to give up a big play, but he’s one of the best No. 2 cornerbacks this league has to offer.

He is big, fast and has fantastic leaping ability. He doesn’t have the greatest hands, but he is known to pull down some targets.

Just as important, he is a solid return man, which gives the Jets depth at the position.

5. Randy Moss, WR

Moss is the type of receiver who can clearly dominate a game when he wants to. The problem is that he doesn’t always want to.

He needs to be on a contending team, which the Jets clearly are. He needs more motivation than money—how about the chance to play Bill Belichick and the Patriots twice a year?

Moss is the greatest deep threat in the history of the game—the Jets need him to stretch the field to help create running games.

He still commands a ton of respect from defensive backs and coordinators, so defenses will be forced to shift coverage his way. With two men focusing on Moss, watch Mark Sanchez and Shonn Greene dissect them to pieces.

4. Terrell Owens, WR

If you saw him play last year, you name he can still play at an elite level. The Jets need a tough receiver who can go over the middle but still stretch the field.

Owens is clearly on the downside of his career, but he can still be a top 20 wide receiver in this game following last year’s performance.

He may be a distraction for most teams, but there is no way he could possibly become a distraction in this Gang Green circus led by the head coach himself. Ryan is the type of coach Owens will quickly call his favorite. They would both get along well as they want to play off the field but dominate on it.

Owens is still a physical receiver who can dominate a game. Right now, he just needs a team willing to take a chance and there is not a single organization right now that would make a better suitor.

3. Darren Sharper, S

Sharper may be on the downside of his career, but sign him to a one- or two-year deal and you’re going to get an experienced leader who can still play at an elite level.

He went to New Orleans two years ago and led the defense to a Super Bowl Championship. The Jets need a playmaking safety next to Jim Leonhard. You name it, Sharper can do it. He will feel rejuvenated playing for Rex Ryan and the Jets.

He could very well be the missing link in the secondary to take the team over that AFC Championship hump.

2. Santonio Holmes, WR

9 of 10
PITTSBURGH, PA - JANUARY 23: Santonio Holmes #10 of the New York Jets celebrates after he scored a third quarter touchdown against the Pittsburgh Steelers during the 2011 AFC Championship game at Heinz Field on January 23, 2011 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvani

The only player who could possibly rival Holmes for the honors of most clutch receiver in the game today is Larry Fitzgerald. Not bad company, eh?

He is an extremely important piece to the Jets’ offensive success. He can do everything this team needs—go across the middle, go deep and most importantly, be clutch.

This is a former Super Bowl MVP entering the prime of his life. The Jets must sign him to ensure that Mark Sanchez has a dominate receiver to toss the rock to.

This is the one man the Jets could acquire right now on offense to seal a game in the waning seconds—for that, he is invaluable.

1. Nnamdi Asomugha, CB

Asomugha may be the best cornerback in the league. The only player who could possibly rival him is already on the Jets in Darrelle Revis.

Imagine the possibilities for this defense if they could create the very best cornerback duo of all-time?

Imagine having two cornerbacks who can play all by themselves on the island and still succeed? The blitz possibilities are endless.

Nnamdi is one of the elite defensive players in the entire league. Every team must make a run at his services, but the Jets need to offer him the best deal of all-time to acquire this superstar.

He’s worth it—especially when you can pair him with Revis. The thought of Revis and Asomugha on the same defense strikes fear in the hearts of 31 other teams, guaranteed. He would solidify this team as the Super Bowl favorites.
