NBA Rumors: Hornets Assistant Stephen Silas Interviewing for Hawks HC Job
Charlotte Hornets assistant coach Stephen Silas is reportedly set to interview with the Atlanta Hawks for their head coaching vacancy Tuesday.
Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN first reported the news and noted Silas worked with Hawks general manager Travis Schlenk during their time with the Golden State Warriors.
Silas joined the Hornets organization as a scout under his father, longtime NBA head coach Paul Silas, in 1999. He became part of the coaching staff in 2000.
Along with Charlotte and Golden State, the Boston native has also had stints with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Washington Wizards.
Silas served as the Hornets' interim head coach for just over a month during the current campaign when Steve Clifford stepped away to deal with an illness. Clifford was fired at season's end, so the Charlotte job is also available.
In December, Silas told Gary Washburn of the Boston Globe he's taken his father's advice during his rise through the coaching ranks, though he also brings his own style to the table:
"I listen to everything he says. He did it in a different way than I do it, obviously. He's an intense, four-letter-word user and he coaches the way that he played when he was with the Celtics. He's always about giving guys confidence and letting them know that you care about them. You need their production and they have to be confident in the way that they play and know that you have confidence in them. That's what he's been telling me lately, as well as a bunch of other things."
The Hawks and former head coach Mike Budenholzer mutually agreed to part ways last month following a 24-58 record that saw Atlanta finish with the NBA's third-worst record.
Wojnarowski previously reported the Portland Trail Blazers' Nate Tibbetts and Warriors' Jarron Collins are also set to interview with the Hawks. Marc Stein of the New York Times reported former Memphis Grizzlies head coach David Fizdale already met with the organization.
