Hawks HC Rumors: David Fizdale, James Borrego Among Candidates for Job
The Atlanta Hawks will reportedly look at a number of assistant coaches during their search for their next head coach.
According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, assistants Stephen Silas (Charlotte Hornets), Nate Tibbetts (Portland Trail Blazers), David Vanterpool (Portland), Ime Udoka (San Antonio Spurs) and James Borrego (San Antonio) are all "expected to be a part of the Hawks search." Sam Amick of USA Today also noted former Memphis Grizzlies coach David Fizdale was among the candidates.
This comes after Wojnarowski reported the Hawks mutually agreed to part ways with head coach Mike Budenholzer on Wednesday.
The Hawks may have seen the writing on the wall with Budenholzer, considering they allowed him to talk to the Phoenix Suns and New York Knicks regarding their coaching vacancies, per Wojnarowski.
"I am grateful for the five years that I spent as coach of the Atlanta Hawks, and will always cherish the incredible contributions, commitment and accomplishments of the players that I was fortunate enough to work with here," Budenholzer said, per Wojnarowski. "From ownership to management, support staff to the community, I'll look back with great pride on what we were able to achieve together with the Hawks."
Budenholzer coached the Hawks for five seasons and led them to the playoffs four times. He won the 2014-15 Coach of the Year while leading a team that reached the Eastern Conference Finals.
That the Hawks are reportedly looking at multiple Spurs assistants in Udoka and Borrego is not surprising after Budenholzer's success. The former Hawks coach was an assistant on Gregg Popovich's staff in San Antonio for 17 years before becoming the head coach in Atlanta.
Whichever coach ultimately gets the job will have a massive rebuild ahead of them. The Hawks were 24-58 this season and don't have many young players who move the needle outside of point guard Dennis Schroder. The 24-year-old was the only player on the team to average better than 15 points a night this season.
The silver lining for the Hawks is they figure to receive a favorable draft pick after the lackluster season. They also have the rights to the first-round picks of the Minnesota Timberwolves and Houston Rockets, per Tankathon.
