Mary Kay Cabot of the Plain Dealer noted McCown was limited in Friday's session.
McCown Comments on Ankle Injury
Monday, Oct. 12
McCown said his ankle felt good a day after the team's overtime victory, adding he would continue to receive treatment, per Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal. The quarterback said he's "hopeful" he'll be able to play in Week 6, but wouldn't reveal if he would miss practice time, per Ulrich.
McCown was seen limping around the locker room on Sunday, per Cabot, who added that McCown suffered the injury on the fifth play of the 12-play, game-winning field-goal drive in overtime. McCown completed 36 of 51 passes for 457 yards and two touchdowns as the Browns moved to 2-3.
When asked if he considered coming out of the game, McCown said the following, per Cabot:
"No, not in that one. You glance down and make sure it's still attached and if it is, you play. One of the linemen was telling me he got bull-rushed and held and tackled into me, so I rolled my ankle. It feels all right. At the moment it was pretty painful. I think I'll be fine, though."
McCown Must Avoid Struggles to Remain Starter
McCown was named Cleveland's starting quarterback coming out of training camp but suffered a concussion in the first half against the New York Giants in Week 1 and missed the next game.
Browns head coach Mike Pettine inserted McCown back into the lineup when he was cleared in Week 3 against Oakland. The 36-year-old threw for 341 yards and two touchdowns in a 27-20 loss.
McCown has been in the NFL for 13 seasons, proving to be a capable backup, but when teams ask him to do more, the cracks show. He's never started a full season, appearing in as many as 14 games once with Arizona in 2004.
One upside for the Browns if McCown's injury causes him to miss time against the Broncos is that it gives the team another chance to see what Johnny Manziel can do in a more prominent role. The controversial former Heisman Trophy winner may not be the future, but he needs reps to see if the first-round pick Cleveland used was worth it or not.
Given the way Pettine has stood behind McCown as the starter, Manziel's ascent may not be a permanent one unless he continues to play well.
