Why Week 8 Bye Is Coming at Perfect Time for San Francisco 49ers
The San Francisco 49ers desperately need a bye week, and fortunately for them, it's coming at the perfect time.
Against the Denver Broncos on Sunday, the 49ers were playing more shorthanded than usual. For the first time this year, they were without Patrick Willis and Mike Iupati for a full game. Their absence was the straw that broke the camel's back.
Defensively, San Francisco allowed 115 rushing yards, which was the most it has given up since Week 1. The 49ers normally rely heavily on their inside linebackers to stop the run out of the 4-2-5 nickel formation, but without Willis, they were exposed.

Rookie WRs Who Will Outplay Their Draft Value 📈
Aided by a balanced offense, Peyton Manning torched the San Francisco secondary, which was without starting cornerback Chris Culliver and nickelback Jimmie Ward.
Offensively, the 49ers have had an up-and-down rushing attack when Iupati has been on the field. But they were clearly out of sorts without him, as Frank Gore had his second-worst average and total for the season (nine carries, 20 yards).
| Starter | Replaced | PFF Rating |
| Joe Looney | Mike Iupati | -5.7 |
| Tramaine Brock | Chris Culliver | -2.6 |
| Chris Borland | Patrick Willis | -2.4 |
The result was a 42-17 demolition.
To get back to dominating the run game on offense and defense, the 49ers will need Willis (toe) and Iupati (concussion) healthy for the second half of the season.
And that's where the bye comes in.
An extra week of rest will only help Iupati pass concussion tests and get healthy. Willis told reporters he plans to be back for San Francisco's Nov. 2 game against the St. Louis Rams.
It's not just those two who need a week off.
Culliver (hamstring), Ward (quadriceps) and Chris Cook (hamstring) will use the extra time to get ready for Week 9, and Glenn Dorsey (biceps), NaVorro Bowman (knee) and Marcus Lattimore (knee) will all get one week closer to playing for the first time this season.
Marcus Martin will have an extra week to prepare for what could be his first career start. Jim Harbaugh told reporters that Martin will have the "first shot" at the starting center position in place of Daniel Kilgore, who suffered a season-ending leg injury against Denver.
Lastly, all of the other regular contributors, particularly the veterans, could use a few days off to recover from their nicks and bruises.
This team could also use a mental break.
The defense has never been worse in the Harbaugh era for one game. Denver scored a touchdown on six of its first eight offensive possessions (not counting the kneel-down at the end of the first half).
Even in the 42-13 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in 2012, the 49ers allowed only five defensive touchdowns—the one other TD was a blocked field-goal return.
Instead of being under fire from the coaches and media for their performance, the Niners will have an honest break.
"I want them to enjoy their families, enjoy their children if they have them, play with their kids and come back mentally stronger, physically stronger," Harbaugh said when asked about the team's schedule for the next week in a Monday press conference. "We resume next Monday."
It might be just what Colin Kaepernick needs after getting sacked six times. Or what Anquan Boldin, Michael Crabtree and Vernon Davis need after their dropped passes.
| Week 9 | vs. STL (2-4) |
| Week 10 | @ NO (2-4) |
| Week 11 | @ NYG (3-4) |
| Week 12 | vs. WSH (2-5) |
| Week 13 | vs. SEA (3-3) |
| Week 14 | @ OAK (0-6) |
| Week 15 | @ SEA (3-3) |
| Week 16 | vs. SD (5-2) |
| Week 17 | vs. ARZ (5-1) |
It's a fresh start for the second half of the season, which will test this team's mettle.
Games against the Seahawks (2x), Arizona Cardinals, San Diego Chargers and New Orleans Saints (road) loom.
Right now, the 49ers are third in the NFC wild-card race. They'll either need to pass Arizona to win the NFC West or the second-place team from either the NFC North or NFC East to get into the playoffs.
To be safe, the Niners will want to get to at least 11 wins.
With Aldon Smith's suspension sentence ending after Week 10 and Willis, Bowman, Iupati and Dorsey all expected back at varying points in the second half, the Niners will have the reinforcements to go on a playoff-yielding run—assuming they get healthy...and stay healthy.
