Complete Breakdown and Predictions for Chicago Bulls 2012 Summer League Roster

Peter EmerickJun 7, 2018

The Chicago Bulls have a lot of talented players on their summer league roster who are going to be putting their best foot forward in hopes of earning a spot on the Bulls roster for the 2012-'13 season.

There's no doubt that the Bulls will need to sign one or two players on their summer league roster to minimum contracts and who are ready to be productive players in the NBA.

With players like Jimmy Butler, Marquis Teague, Ramone Moore, Leon Powe and Jermaine Taylor all either fighting for roster spots or for positioning on the Bulls' depth chart, it's going to be interesting to see how things play out in the summer league.

Ahead is a complete breakdown and prediction for every member of the Bulls' 2012-13 summer league roster.

Chicago Bulls Summer League Roster

1 of 14

Tuesday, July 17 at 7:00 PM: Chicago Bulls vs. Boston Celtics

Wednesday, July 18 at 3:00 PM: Chicago Bulls vs. Houston Rockets

Friday, July 20 at 5:30 PM: Chicago Bulls vs. Golden State Warriors

Saturday, July 21 at 5:30 PM: Chicago Bulls vs. L.A. Clippers

Sunday, July 22 at 1:00 PM: Chicago Bulls vs. Milwaukee Bucks

Justin Johnson, PG, Dakota Kings (NBA D-League)

2 of 14

Player Profile: 6'2'', 175 pounds

2011-12 Per-Game Stats: 9.8 points, 2.8 assists, 2.4 rebounds, 0.6 steals, 43.4 FG%, 29.5 3P%. 81.1 FT%

Player Breakdown: Justin Johnson can score, there's no question about that. The only problem is that he's only 175 pounds, soaking wet.

Johnson's size is the main thing that will hold him back when it comes to making an NBA roster, and the problem is that he hasn't gotten any bigger or stronger since the end of the 2011-12 season.

Johnson will put up decent production during his summer league days with the Bulls, but it won't be enough to beat out guys like Marquis Teague, Jimmy Butler or even Ramone Moore.

Prediction: Johnson's professional career is going to have to continue in the NBA D-League or overseas during the 2012-13 season.

Demetri McCamey, PG/SG, Mersin Büyükşehir Belediyesi S.K. (Turkey)

3 of 14

Player Profile: 6'3'', 204 pounds

2011-12 Per-Game Stats: 8.0 points, 1.6 assists, 2.0 rebounds, 0.6 steals, 49.0 FG%, 34.6 3P%, 77.8 FT%

Player Breakdown: Demetri McCamey was a very productive player at the University of Illinois. Unfortunately his play didn't earn him a spot on an NBA roster.

Instead he had to play his first year of professional basketball overseas, and that didn't go so well for him either. McCamey's shoot-first, pass-second mentality didn't translate in Israel, and once again it won't translate into the NBA.

McCamey will have to put on quite a show to earn a spot on the Bulls roster for the 2012-13 season and I don't see that happening.

Prediction: McCamey will be playing back in Israel during the 2012-13 season, which is what he needs. McCamey needs to develop into a more complete player to ever have a chance at playing in the NBA.

Marquis Teague, PG, Kentucky (2012 No. 29 Overall Pick)

4 of 14

Player Profile: 6'2'', 189 pounds

2011-12 Per-Game Stats: 10.0 points, 4.8 assists, 2.5 rebounds, 0.9 steals, 41.2 FG%, 32.5 3P%, 71.4 FT%

Player Breakdown: Marquis Teague was a steal for the Chicago Bulls at the No. 29 spot in the 2012 draft. Teague is an athletic and explosive point guard, although it may not have shown in his time at Kentucky.

Teague's true potential didn't shine at Kentucky because of the complementary talent on the roster, but he will rise to the top as he plays against the top talent on the Bulls roster.

The summer league is important for Teague, as it will be his first chance to showcase his true potential at the NBA level. But it won't be a make-or-break situation for him, because he'll be coming off the Bulls' bench no matter what happens.

Prediction: Teague will be the first or second man coming off the bench for the Bulls to start the 2012-13 season.

Ramone Moore, SG, Temple (Undrafted Free Agent)

5 of 14

Player Profile: 6'4'', 190 pounds

2010-11 Per-Game Stats: 17.3 points, 3.4 assists, 4.3 rebounds, 1.1 steals, 42.6 FG%, 38.3 3P%, 76.3 FT%

Player Breakdown: Ramone Moore is an athletically-gifted shooter who could definitely benefit from a solid summer league performance.

The Bulls could use the talents of a player like Moore, who can hit shots with impressive efficiency from beyond-the-arc while also being able to score in the paint.

Depth at the shooting guard spot is key for the Bulls heading into next season. Unfortunately for Moore, the Bulls have Marquis Teague, Kirk Hinrich and possibly Jimmy Butler ahead of him on their depth chart, and that could mean that Moore won't be on an NBA roster to start the 2012-13 season.

Prediction: Moore will impress during the summer league with his pure ability to score, but the Bulls won't be able to offer him a roster spot. Moore's 2012-13 season will be spent overseas.

Jermaine Taylor, SG, Rio Grande Valley (NBA D-League)

6 of 14

Player Profile: 6'5'', 205 pounds

2011-12 Per-Game Stats: 14.2 points, 2.0 assists, 3.2 rebounds, 0.8 steals, 42.5 FG%, 31.5 3P%, 73.9 FT%

Player Breakdown: While Jermaine Taylor spent the 2011-12 season in the NBA D-League, he's spent time in the NBA—playing for the Houston Rockets and the Sacramento Kings during the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons.

During his time in the NBA Taylor put up an average of 5.4 points per game and that, combined with his recent experience in the D-League, could help him find his way onto the Bulls roster to start next season.

If Taylor can prove that he's become a more efficient player he can certainly compete for one of the final roster spots on the Bulls bench heading into next season. Having Taylor's experience on the bench could help the Bulls during the start of next year, until Rose returns from his torn ACL.

Prediction: Taylor will earn a spot on the Bulls' bench at the start of the 2012-13 season, even if he's buried on their bench.

Edwin Ubiles, SG, Washington Wizards (1 Year Experience)

7 of 14

Player Profile: 6'6'', 204 pounds

2011-12 Per-Game Stats:19.6 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 1.0 steals, 50.3 FG%, 33.8 3P%, 75.3 FT%

Player Breakdown: Edwin Ubiles spent last season dominating the NBA D-League, and he's spending this summer not only on the Chicago Bulls' summer league roster, but also on the Brooklyn Nets.

It's clear that multiple teams are after Ubiles' lanky talents on the wing, and the Bulls would certainly be wise to pursue him—assuming his D-League experience translates into the ranks of the NBA.

With a big summer league performance, Ubiles could definitely find himself on an NBA roster next season. The Bulls would certainly be wise to add this smooth jumper to their depth chart at the shooting guard position.

Prediction: Ubiles will be a part of the Bulls roster to start the 2012-13 season.

Chase Simon, SG/SF, Detroit (Undrafted Free Agent)

8 of 14

Player Profile: 6'7'', 216 pounds

2011-12 Per-Game Stats: 13.3 points, 2.4 assists, 4.4 rebounds, 1.1 steals, 37.0 FG%, 31.0 3P%, 76.6 FT%

Player Breakdown: Chase Simons is an interesting player. On one hand, he's an explosive offensive player. On the other hand, he's a very inconsistent and inefficient player, which is the main flaw in his game.

During the summer league, Simons will have to show that he's either a more complete player than he showed in Detroit or that his efficiency shooting the ball has improved.

I don't see either of those happening. That's why Simons will have a very tough time making the Bulls roster for the 2012-13 season, especially considering the other talent he will be going up against.

Prediction: Simons' 2012-13 season will be spent overseas, working on increasing his efficiency on both sides of the ball.

Jimmy Butler, SF, Chicago Bulls (1 Year Experience)

9 of 14

Player Profile: 6'7'', 220 pounds

2011-12 Per-Game Stats: 2.6 points, 0.3 assists, 1.3 rebounds, 0.3 steals, 40.5 FG%, 18.2 3P%, 76.8 FT%

Player Breakdown: The Bulls have Jimmy Butler under contract through the 2012-13 season and that won't change at the end of the summer league.

Butler showed flashes of brilliance during the past season, putting up 12 points two times. While Butler has a lot of growing to do, he's an athletic player who can make a difference on the Bulls' bench.

Hopefully Butler will show during the summer league that he can be a more efficient player than he was last season, especially from beyond-the-arc. Butler needs to dominate the summer league, to show the Bulls that he's ready to be a legitimate bench player in the NBA.

Prediction: Butler will be the third or fourth player coming off the Bulls' bench to start the 2012-13 season.

Olek Czyz, PF, Nevada (Undrafted Free Agent)

10 of 14

Player Profile: 6'7'', 240 pounds

2011-12 Per-Game Stats: 13.8 points, 0.9 assists, 6.5 rebounds, 0.7 steals, 54.1 FG%, 29.6 3P%, 62.8 FT%

Player Breakdown: Olek Czyz was a productive player at Nevada. The only question now is if his production and ability to score in the paint will carry over into the NBA.

In college, Czyz didn't go up against the elite talent, and that will certainly hurt him during the summer league. Czyz will have to prove that his range can help him excel in the NBA.

On a Bulls team that has players like Carlos Boozer and Taj Gibson at the power forward position, it's going to be an uphill battle for Czyz to make the roster. That's something I don't see happening.

Prediction: Czyz will be starting his professional career overseas during the 2012-13 season.

Leon Powe, PF, Memphis Grizzlies (5 Years Experience)

11 of 14

Player Profile: 6'8'', 240 pounds

2010-11 Per-Game Stats: 5.5 points, 0.3 assists, 1.6 rebounds, 0.2 steals, 50.0 FG%, 60.9 FT%

Player Breakdown: It's clear that Leon Powe's career is on decline, but that doesn't mean he couldn't find his game during his time on the Bulls' summer league roster.

Powe is a solid defensive player who could help bolster the Bulls' front court. This is a major need, especially without Omer Asik coming off their bench this upcoming season.

What Powe needs to do during the summer league is show that he's improved on the offensive side of the ball. If he's done that and shown that he won't be a liability on offense, the Bulls could certainly utilize his veteran talents next season.

Prediction: The only thing that could keep the Bulls from signing Powe is the fact that they'll have to pay him the five-year NBA minimum of nearly $1 million. Luckily for Power, his veteran experience will be enough to help the Bulls overlook having to overpay him.

Malcolm Thomas, PF, San Antonio Spurs (1 Year Experience)

12 of 14

Player Profile: 6'9'', 233 pounds

2011-12 Per-Game Stats: 0.3 points, 0.3 assists, 1.0 rebounds, 0.0 FG%, 50.0 FT%

Player Breakdown: While Malcolm Thomas saw minutes in three games for the San Antonio Spurs last season, he spent most of his time in the NBA D-League, averaging around 16.5 points per game.

Unfortunately for Thomas his production didn't translate into the NBA, and that's going to be the case next season as well.

Thomas needs to add a serious level of physicality to his game. If he does that he might be able to find his way back onto an NBA roster, but that won't mean that he'll see much time.

Prediction: Thomas will be spending the majority of the 2012-13 season in the NBA D-League or overseas.

Jamie Skeen, PF, Ironi Ashkelon (Israel)

13 of 14

Player Profile: 6'9'', 220 pounds

2011-12 Per-Game Stats: 9.0 points, 0.8 assists, 4.8 rebounds, 0.8 steals, 54.2 FG%, 36.4 3P%, 66.0 FT%

Player Breakdown: Back when Jamie Skeen was leading VCU to a deep run in the NCAA Tournament I thought he'd be a decent NBA player, but he's never gotten that chance.

That could all change this year as he has a chance to earn a spot on the Bulls roster for the 2012-13 season. With a year of experience playing professionally in Europe and in Israel, Skeen has developed into a more complete and efficient player.

With a solid performance in the summer league, Skeen could be filling out the Bulls' bench next season, instead of trying to find his identity overseas.

Prediction: Skeen will be a part of the Bulls roster next season, even if it means spending time on and off in the NBA D-League.

Henry Sims, C, Georgetown (Undrafted Free Agent)

14 of 14

Player Profile: 7''0', 251 pounds

2011-12 Per-Game Stats: 11.6 points, 3.5 assists, 6.0 rebounds, 0.6 steals, 46.2 FG%, 70.8 FT%

Player Breakdown: Henry Sims earned a roster spot on the Utah Jazz summer league roster and so far he's looked somewhat overwhelmed and out-of-place.

Unfortunately that's exactly what I expect from Sims during his time on the Bulls' summer league roster too. Sims will benefit from time overseas, where he will be able to add strength to his frame and work on his mid-range game.

The Bulls need more depth at the center position, but Sims isn't the player who will be able to add that depth. He's not a complete enough player right now.

Prediction: Sims will spend the 2012-13 season overseas working on his game on both sides of the ball.
