Do You Believe in Denver Broncos Quarterback Tim Tebow Now?

Henry BrownJun 7, 2018

If you don't believe in Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow by now, maybe you never will.

Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Wild Card game, Tebow provided yet another miracle; however, this miracle was not just any other miracle. The latest one came against a team that have won six Super Bowls and is one of the NFL's oldest and most storied franchises.

Tebow's 80-yard scoring strike to wide receiver Demaryius Thomas on the first play of overtime gave the Broncos a thrilling 29-23 overtime victory over the Steelers and sent reverberations throughout the city of Denver.

The miracle is being called by many "The Miracle in Mile High."

Mile High Stadium has seen its share of miracle victories, but Sunday's improbable win against Pittsburgh will forever be etched in the minds of Broncos fans.

Not only did Tebow lead Denver to the win, but he did what everyone around the NFL said that he couldn't do: throw the football.

The Broncos won the coin toss to start overtime and accepted the kick. Under the league's new overtime rules, the only way a team can win outright is to score on the first possession. The new rule was implemented to ensure both teams have possession of the football.

Pittsburgh would never get a chance.

Following the kickoff from its own 20, Tebow took the snap and moved around in the pocket and found Thomas in one-on-one coverage against Steelers defensive back Ike Taylor. With no safety over the middle to help, Tebow hit Thomas on a slant pattern. Thomas caught the ball in stride over the middle, stiff-armed Taylor and outran two Pittsburgh defenders to the end zone, sending the Mile High Stadium fans into a frenzy.

The 80-yard touchdown pass was the longest pass play in Tebow's two-year career, and it was also the longest in postseason history.

What makes Tebow's latest heroics immortal is that Tebow threw for 316 yards and two touchdowns against a Pittsburgh defense that finished the regular season first in both total defense and against the pass. The Steelers pass defense gave up only 171 yards a game during the year, but would be burned by Tebow on Sunday.

Tebow's 300-yard-plus passing game was only the second time in his short career he has surpassed the mark. Other highlights that stood out in Tebow's passing game against Pittsburgh were his three 50-yard plus completions, including five over 30 yards (both a first for Tebow), his quarterback rating (125.6) and most notably, his 15.0 pass attempt average.

The number that was the most impressive was the five plays over 30 yards. Pittsburgh led the NFL this season in fewest passing completions of 30 or more yards, with seven.

Although he completed 10-of-21 passes, Tebow was the most effective went it counted most.

Tebow entered Sunday's playoff game riding a three-game losing streak. In the three losses (New England, Buffalo and Kansas City), Tebow played miserably, and his critics were many. In Week 16 against the Kansas City Chiefs, in a playoff-like atmosphere, Tebow was only 6-for-22 passing for a season-low 60 yards. His quarterback rating for that game was an unheard of 20.6.

With a three-game losing streak and his performance way below average, Tebow's detractors started firing away, and many questioned was this the end of Tim Tebow being a starting quarterback in the NFL. Several fans became incensed with his play and wondered, did the Broncos get rid of the wrong quarterback?

Kyle Orton had started the season, but was benched after Denver's 1-4 start. He remained on the bench, but was released by the Broncos on Nov. 22 before being picked up by the Kansas City Chiefs. Orton led the Chiefs past the Broncos, 7-3, two weeks ago.

Now, Tebow is a folk hero.

Tebow has won back over his fans, and many more are jumping on the bandwagon.

For someone who has been constantly told what he can't do, Tebow is proving what he can do: win

The win over the Steelers was improbable, but not impossible. Tebow's famous moniker of "Just Believe" is making many people believers. A victory over the New England Patriots next weekend will garner more believers, but if Denver loses, will fans still have faith in him?

If not, you didn't believe in Tim Tebow anyway.
