While your specific league may require you to weigh thinks like draft-round or salary-cap costs, the general goal is keeping as much talent as possible.

Know your league particulars.

This might be the most obvious advice you will hear, but it's also the most important. Because each keeper league has its own set of rules, you need to know exactly what they are, so you can apply them to the general advice you'll find in a place like this.

Universal rankings can be helpful, but they may not settle your debates. If your league uses a salary cap or attaches draft-pick costs to keepers, that changes things a lot. That third-round sleeper you found last season may not look as appealing this year if they jump to a second- or even first-round cost, for instance.

Stick to your team timeline.

If you keep a big chunk of your roster, then you should have a pretty decent idea of your championship chances this season. Use those odds—the realistic ones, not the optimistic ones that only exist in a best-case scenario—to steer your draft decisions.

Win-right-now rosters need instant-impact, so you'd want to prioritize proven veterans over dart-throw rookies. Long-term rebuilders, on the other hand, have no use for 30-somethings, but they should be collecting as many long-term lottery tickets as possible. It only takes one jackpot prize or two to instantly change your team's trajectory.
