PGA Tour Suspends Matt Gogel 6 Months for Betting on Golf Tournaments
The PGA Tour announced on Wednesday that Matt Gogel has been suspended from competition for six months through Feb. 22 for betting on golf tournaments.
It was noted in the announcement that Gogel didn't place bets on tournaments in which he was a participant:
Gogel released a statement saying he "unknowingly violated the PGA Tour policy by placing small recreational wagers on golf."
Per Eamon Lynch of Golfweek, a spokesperson said the PGA Tour "would not comment on the specific tournaments or outcomes Gogel bet on."
Gogel added in his statement that he "made an honest mistake" and "would never knowingly violate the integrity of the game of golf."
According to Lynch, the 55-year-old has competed in 18 events on the PGA Champions Tour in 2026, earning more than $760,000 in prize money. This past Sunday, he finished tied for 30th in the Rogers Charity Classic on the senior circuit. He tied for second in last month's ISPS Handa Senior Open, a senior tour major, and he's ranked 20th in the season-long Charles Schwab Cup points race. Though he's never won a Champions Tour event, he's earned $2.68 million since joining the circuit after turning 50 in 2021.
Before his run on the Champions Tour, Gogel joined the PGA Tour in 2000 and earned his lone career win at the 2002 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. He was forced to retire just seven years into his career due to injuries.
While six months away from competition could be difficult to bounce back from, Gogel has been cooperative with the PGA Tour throughout this process, and he's ready to accept his penalty.
