Liverpool Transfer Rumours: 6 Players Who Could Join the Reds in January

Thomas AtzenhofferJun 4, 2018

Last January, Liverpool put a stamp of intent on their plans for the future. It truly was a case of "out with the old and in with the new."

After three-and-a-half seasons with the Reds, forward Ryan Babel took the opportunity to move on. He made 146 appearances for Liverpool scoring 22 goals. Most of us will never forget his belter against Chelsea in the 2007-08 Champions League semifinal second leg at Stamford Bridge.

However, the time had come for him to move on and his departure signaled the arrival of another Ajax player. This one was of a different class than Babel, as the Dutchman left to join Bundesliga outfit TSG 1899 Hoffenheim for £6 million.

Luis Suarez showed up at Melwood with a reputation that preceded him and it only took a debut that saw him score within 16 minutes to endear him to the Kop instantly. Since then he has continued to prove he was worth all of the £22 million the Reds paid for him

But the Reds were not done as Fernando Torres, who at one time was the jewel of Reds fans worldwide, departed for Chelsea in a £50 million deal. The Spaniard's place was filled within the day as Newcastle Untied also parted with their most beloved striker when homegrown Andy Carroll moved from Tyneside to Merseyside for £35 million.

Many people forget that it was a shrewd bit of business in the January window last time for the Reds with them technically only spending an additional £1 million other than what they recouped from the sales of two players that have yet to show they were worth the fee to either of their new teams.

Now that the August window is nearly over, the Reds are looking to continue their business by moving out much of the old as they have already brought in over half a dozen new faces.

This coming January could see more shrewd second-half business as the club will hope to balance out some of their transfer dollars, but no doubt the Reds will be looking strengthen again.

With that said, here is a list of six potential targets that the Reds could be looking at bringing in come the next open transfer period.

Craig Bellamy

1 of 7

Craig Bellamy could be in line for a free transfer to Anfield come January. Bellamy has already had time on Merseyside in the past when he made 41 appearances for nine goals during a one-year stint in a Red shirt for the 2006-07 season.

Currently he is believed to possibly be linked with the team for a last-minute move at the end of the month, but with Dirk Kuyt still with the squad I do not see the Welshman joining anytime soon.

However, if Kuyt's links to Internazionale Milan are true and he were to move on, then Bellamy could be in a position to play backup come January.

But in all honesty, I think Kuyt is too much of a Red to leave at the moment.

Hugo Rodallega

A current possible target for the Merseyside club is Wigan Athletic's Colombian striker Hugo Rodallega. If the right circumstances play out he could be a cut-rate signing for the Reds come January.

The player has 94 appearances and 22 goals for the Latics, but if they fail to look like they will stay up come January there could be an exodus of several players including Rodallega. Liverpool could also do with another striker on the bench alongside of Dirk Kuyt.

M'Baye Niang

3 of 7

Liverpool and Tottenham both look set to do battle over the signature of 16-year-old M'Baye Niang. The player has already broken into the first team at French Ligue 1 side Caen.

Both Harry Redknapp and Kenny Dalglish are keen on the player with the Reds possibly willing to spend in upwards of £10 million in a total package deal for the youngster.

The Reds academy is becoming one of the best in all of England thanks to Rafael Benitez's hard work to rebuild it before he parted ways with the club.

Danilo Pereira

4 of 7

Portuguese U-20 starlet Danilo Luís Hélio Pereira has been tipped as a possible target of both Liverpool and Arsenal in the future. The Parma player is yet to make a splash in Serie A, but should make his debut this season.

Both clubs could be on the lookout for a defensive midfielder as Arsenal's midfield is increasingly getting thinner, while the Reds have not had a truly defensive-minded midfielder since the departure of Javier Mascherano.

Adam Johnson

5 of 7

With the Reds still looking to increase their wide options in attack, they could turn to Manchester City for their in-and-out-of-favor winger Adam Johnson.

The player has shown great promise for Roberto Mancini, but he does not always show great confidence in him.

Ryan Shawcross, Gary Cahill or Scott Dann

6 of 7

Despite the Reds' recent signing of a £7 million killer deal for Uruguayan defender Sebastian Coates, there could still be an additional center-back signing for the Reds come January.

Without a doubt Arsenal are in the running for all three as the Gunners have perhaps the most depleted and understocked back line of any of the league's top six clubs.

However, with Jamie Carragher not getting any younger and fears at times over the health of Daniel Agger, there could be another new defender added in the next open transfer period.

Conclusion

7 of 7

The Reds continue to keep making waves in the market and I expect them to keep doing so over the next years as the new owners are truly in the midst of turning the club completely around.

It is a great time to be a Reds fan and I look forward to the continued improvement and growth of the club.
