Arsenal Transfer Latest: Wenger Set to Spend £35m on Juan Mata, Phil Jagielka
Arsenal are reportedly on the verge of completing a deal for Valencia winger Juan Mata with Everton's Phil Jagielka set to follow him to north London.
According to The Sun this morning, Mata has told friends he will be joining Arsenal for around £19 million. The amount is quoted as £17.5 million at the Daily Mail.
When that deal is finalized, the suggestion is Arsene Wenger will turn his attentions to bringing England defender Jagielka to The Emirates.
The Sun claim Arsenal will put in an initial bid of £13 million for Jagielka, which they expect Everton to turn down. The Gunners are then prepared to go straight back in with an upped offer of £15 million—which should be enough to get their man.
As the article rightly points out, both transfers would trump the Arsenal transfer record of £12 million paid for Andrey Arshavin in 2009.
Moreover, they would finally give Arsenal fans reason for optimism in a summer that has been dominated by talk of their best players moving elsewhere.
That said, Mata's arrival could well smooth an exit for Cesc Fabregas. As the Daily Mail suggests, the signing of the Spaniard is likely to make Wenger and Arsenal's board feel a lot more comfortable about letting Fabregas join Barcelona.
Meanwhile, Samir Nasri continues to be linked with a move to Manchester City, who yesterday sealed a deal for Argentine striker Sergio Aguero.
It seems things are finally hotting up in the transfer window.
