Premier League Week 10 Picks: Predicting Results for the Weekend's Big Games

Leigh WalshOct 28, 2013

What’s the Welsh for El Clasico? Because that’s the comparison Swansea boss Michael Laudrup drew when asked about his side’s highly anticipated clash with Cardiff City this Sunday, according to James Dickenson in the Express.

The Premier League’s first-ever Welsh derby takes the spotlight on Nov. 3 in the day’s only 4 p.m. GMT kick-off, but there’s plenty more big clashes to enjoy before Sunday evening comes around.

Newcastle and Chelsea begin Matchweek 10 in Saturday’s early kick-off, while Liverpool head south to London to take on league leaders Arsenal.

Cardiff City vs. Swansea City

The last time Cardiff and Swansea clashed was in the Championship during the 2010/11 season. That year, the away side won each of their contests 1-0, but a lot has changed between then and now.

Under the guidance of Michael Laudrup, Swansea have firmly established themselves as a Premier League club. They finished ninth last season, but it has been their pleasing style of play that has impressed the neutrals and drawn plaudits.

Cardiff currently sit 16th in the table, and you get the sense they will spend the season more focused on those below them than those above them. A 3-2 win over Manchester City offered a glimpse of their potential, but defeats to West Ham and Newcastle demonstrated the challenges of life in the top tier.

Seven places separate the sides in the table and Swansea, who sit ninth, will be expected to pick up all three points despite being the away side.

Cardiff have scored less and conceded more than their neighbours, and Malky Mackay will be concerned with his team’s goalscoring record. He does have players like Frazier Campbell, Peter Odemwingie and Craig Bellamy at his disposal, but Cardiff have found the net just eight times in nine matches, failing to score on four separate occasions.

In their 0-0 draw with Norwich at the weekend, Cardiff were dominated. They had just 39 percent of possession and allowed Norwich 31 shots on goal, per Saj Chowdhury of BBC Sport.

If Swansea enjoy as much of the ball as Norwich did, then they are more likely to take their chances.

Prediction: Swansea City 2-1 Cardiff City

Arsenal vs. Liverpool

Two of the Premier League’s in-form teams will clash at the Emirates this weekend. Arsenal have gone unbeaten since their opening-day loss to Aston Villa, while Liverpool have lost just once at home to Southampton.

Arsenal currently sit top on 22 points with Liverpool two points back in third place, and there are multiple questions each manager must attempt to answer in training ahead of the showdown.

For Wenger, the question is how to contain both Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge, who will pose the type of threat his team has yet to deal with in the league this year.

“SAS,” as they have become known, work the channels better than most. They are both comfortable playing through the centre as well as down both wings, and this will be where the concern is for Wenger.

The Arsenal manager has packed a number of central midfielders into his team this year, partly due to their form and partly due to the injuries to Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. This has meant Arsenal have lacked width, but while the formation hasn’t affected them going forward, it could potentially hurt them at the back.

Arsenal’s makeshift wingers naturally cut inside when they're in possession, but when the ball is lost, their full-backs are prone to being exposed. The one game it was evident in was against Spurs in the North London derby. Spurs played poorly that day, but Andros Townsend was given numerous chances to run at Kieran Gibbs, and although the full-back dealt well with the threat that day, it will have been an eye opener.

For Brendan Rodgers, the question is how to deal with Arsenal’s threat through the middle. Mesut Ozil, Aaron Ramsey, Santi Cazorla and Jack Wilshere all enjoy space in the centre, and the Northern Irishman will have to make a decision on whether or not to stick with his five at the back or bring an additional player into midfield to deal with Arsenal’s fluidity in that area.

The two sides have scored 37 goals between them this season, and this game promises to be a high-scoring encounter.

Prediction: Arsenal 2-2 Liverpool
