Chris Paul: Pros and Cons of the Los Angeles Lakers' Proposed Trade

Jerry SanchezDec 10, 2011

The past couple of days have been rather interesting in the world of sports.

In baseball, the Anaheim Angels signed Albert Pujols for a 10-year contract worth $254 million dollars. That is an amazing amount amount of money and I'm sure Angel supporters wish for him to reel in a world championship.

In soccer, "El Clásico" took place and Barçelona conceded a victory over Real Madrid after trailing 1-0 in another intense matchup.

And now, in the NBA, the Dallas Mavericks sent Center Tyson Chandler to the New York Knicks in a three-way trade involving the Washington Wizards.

And of course everyone knows about the situation with Chris Paul and the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Lakers were going to land the best point guard in the NBA—but here comes the almighty David Stern and ruins it for the Lakers. Well, that's what it seemed at first. Ruining and screwing over the Lakers.

I have mixed reactions toward this trade. I am a Laker fan, so seeing Pau and Odom leave after watching them play for so long, it's hard to believe they will leave. However, seeing CP3 command the court for LA is a dream!

Many were going to save around 80 dollars to buy a brand new CP3 jersey while others were going to save their Gasol and LO jerseys.

It comes as no surprise that good and bad will come from every single trade that has ever gone through. Here are a couple of pros and cons you will notice when the Lakers tip off against the Chicago Bulls on Christmas Day.

Pro 1: New Point Guard

1 of 6

The Lakers receive an earful of criticism all the time. One you always hear is the lack of a point guard.

Derek Fisher is getting old and has been past his prime for sometime. However, his dedication, leadership and clutch have kept him on the best team in the NBA.

Nonetheless, when the Lakers play a team like the Bulls or Thunder, it's evident D-Fish can't keep up with the faster, trickier point guards that include Derrick Rose and Russell Westbrook.

So, with Paul arriving at the Lakers, this defeat that we consistently see at the point guard position will stop! Instead we get the best point guard in the NBA; there isn't much explanation to make since you know what CP3 can do in the backcourt.

Plus, D-Fish drops his starter position to help out the bench. With this, we would probably see Steve Blake, a huge disappointment, leave the Lakers and have rookie Darrius Morris take the third string of the point guard position.

Pro 2: Most Dominant Backcourt in the NBA

2 of 6

What happens when you add CP3 to a Lakers team that owns Kobe Bryant? Heaven.

It's as easy as that. You have arguably the best guard in NBA history teaming up with the best point guard in the NBA.

What you'll see is basket after pass, basket after pass, basket after pass. It'll be interesting to see how CP3 will back down from his regular leading role to become the sidekick. I doubt there will be any problems in stepping down.

This is a dream backcourt.

Pro 3: Building Block To Landing Dwight Howard

3 of 6

Dwight wants to leave the Magic—that's clear.

Will the Orlando Magic be as stupid as Cleveland and let him walk without getting anything in return? I doubt it. The Cavs went from a title contender to the laughing stock of the NBA in a matter of months.

Who's to say it won't happen to the Magic as well?

Dwight to the Lakers is something we have been hearing since the Lakers beat them in the Finals three years ago. And with CP3 arriving in LA to help Kobe, how does LA not become more appealing to Dwight?

There are so many questions to ask about this scenario, such as: Is Andrew Bynum still untouchable? Would the Lakers really pass up receiving Dwight to keep this prodigy that is Bynum? I would hope not; I'm sure anyone would take Dwight over Bynum any day.

So the final question is: What will the Lakers do in order to attain Dwight's services?

Con 1: No Power Forwards

4 of 6

I came home after a tiring soccer practice on Thursday to hear that the Lakers have received Chris Paul. To my joy, I didn't even check the actual deal that took place.

I had no idea that they traded their primary power forwards or that Houston was involved in the deal!

Once I had all the details, I was in shock. I had that feeling I felt after watching the premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part Two. It was an empty feeling.

Losing Pau, the main man who assisted Kobe in getting two more titles under his belt. And not seeing the Kardashians at STAPLES anymore. Oh no!

Well, obviously LO was the best bench player in the NBA last season and to lose that player who can play PG, SG, SF, PF and C was hard to soak in.

No more will we see Pau or LO under a Lakers jersey. We would now have to see each one four times a year. Maybe more depending on how their new teams handle the shortened season.

Instead, we Laker fans wonder who will be the new starting PF and who will be his backup. I doubt we'll see Joe Smith in the starting lineup along with Derick Caracter as his backup.

Con 2: The Chemistry Is Broken

5 of 6

It's clear that Kobe and Pau have amazing chemistry and that really unites the Lakers. On the court, they spoke Spanish in order to trick the opposing teams into what they were going to do.

Many times, we saw Pau post up and Kobe hand him the ball and let Pau do work. Other times it was the opposite.

Several fans will reminisce and lament on how we will no longer see the duo that was Pau and Kobe.

Along with this Kobe and Pau duo, we won't see the frontcourt mixes of Pau and LO, Pau and Bynum, or LO and Bynum. Between them three, they were dominant. The trio was consistently named the most fierce frontcourt in the NBA.

We will no longer see any of that.

Instead, we get to see how CP3 will fit with Kobe and the rest. It's really troubling me to see how it'll go down.

Con 3: Pressure

6 of 6

Kobe and the rest are always under loads of pressure about being the best in the NBA.

With the addition of a superstar point guard, Kobe, along with CP3, will receive criticism and blame just like the big three in Miami.

Everything they do will be watched. Everything they don't will be mentioned. Kobe's been under major pressure before, but how about CP3? Will he be able to handle it with a team like the Lakers?

Man, I'm probably boring you with so many unanswered questions. I just want to see the final lineup before the tipoff game against Chicago!

Thanks for the read and all comments are welcomed.
