NFL Power Rankings: Which Teams Will Challenge the Green Bay Packers?

John FrielNov 15, 2011

Nine teams have attempted to take down the defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers and all nine have failed miserably, with only four games being decided by less than 10 points. They've taken down their fair share of cellar dwellers with teams like Carolina, St. Louis, and Minnesota twice, but they've also answered the call by beating New Orleans, Chicago, and Atlanta by considerable margins.

With only seven games remaining, the Packers run at perfection could end soon with an improved schedule and a suspect defense that is currently ranked 31st in passing yards given up per game. We'll take a look at the three best possibilities of who could take down the Packers over the rest of the regular season.

November 24 at Detroit

The only other division rival that the Packers have yet to face this season, Green Bay can consider themselves lucky that they missed out on the onslaught that the Detroit Lions ran when winning their first five games of the year.

Since starting out 5-0 with impressive wins over Dallas and Chicago, the Lions have gone 1-3 with losses to San Francisco, Atlanta, and Chicago and the lone win coming against a dismal Denver club. They'll get their biggest test of the season on Thanksgiving against the Packers in their first matchup of the season with the current division leader.

The Lions are ninth in passing yards and could have a field day against the weak Packers secondary. Don't be surprised if this is the Packers first loss of the year, as they possibly allow Calvin Johnson to rack up 150 yards and a few touchdowns.

December 4 at New York Giants

A week after their showdown with the Detroit Lions, the Packers get another test with this one coming in the Meadowlands against the New York Giants.

The Giants have garnered the reputation of "giant killers" with their most significant win coming against the New England Patriots. Eli Manning showcased his reputation of being clutch with a last minute drive against the AFC's biggest powerhouse.

This will be another tough week for the Packers secondary as they take on a passing offense ranked fifth in the league in passing yards per game.

December 25 vs. Chicago

There is no doubt in my mind that the Chicago Bears have this game penciled in. Their second matchup of the year with the Green Bay Packers takes place on Christmas day in Lambeau with possible playoff implications on the line, since it's expected that they'll be contending with the Lions for a postseason spot.

The Bears passing game is weak, but I would never bet against one of the NFL's top running backs in Matt Forte who struggled rushing the ball in the Bears previous meeting with the Packers. He and the Bears will be looking for revenge after suffering a 27-17 loss in Week 3 to the team that currently holds the NFL's top record.

If Jay Cutler and Matt Forte are at the top of their game, this game could easily go either way.
