Are the San Francisco 49ers Better Than the Green Bay Packers?
There is no doubt that the San Francisco 49ers and the Green Bay Packers are the class of the NFC. The only question left to answer is which team is better, the 49ers or the Packers?
With both teams looking to continue their winning ways in Week 9, let's take an in-depth look and analysis to see if San Francisco is better than Green Bay.
On Offense
1 of 7For the Green Bay Packers, it all starts and ends with Aaron Rodgers. The man is the best in the game and as long as he is playing like he currently is, the Packers can hang with any team in the league.
Unfortunately, the same can't be said about Alex Smith of the San Francisco 49ers. While you have to admire what Jim Harbaugh has done with Smith, comparing him to Rodgers is like comparing a plain apple to the world's greatest apple pie. It just isn't comparable.
The Packers also have the better receiving corps with Greg Jennings, Jordy Nelson, Donald Driver, James Jones and Randall Cobb outplaying Michael Crabtree, Braylon Edwards, Josh Morgan and a bunch of other unknown wide receivers.
One area on offense that the 49ers have the edge is at running back. Even though Frank Gore started the season slow, he has really picked up his play lately and is running like one of the top backs in the league.
James Starks and Ryan Grant combined cannot even come close to putting up the same numbers as Gore.
Overall, you have to like the high-powered offense of Green Bay led by Aaron Rodgers in this matchup.
Advantage: Green Bay
On Defense
2 of 7Coming into the 2011 season, the Green Bay Packers were expected to have one of the better defenses in the league. They were supposed to be stout against the run and even better against the pass.
However, the Packers have had a very difficult time defensively. They currently give up the fifth-most yards in the NFL, with most of those coming through the air.
While teams haven't been extremely successful scoring on them, they are still giving up 20 points a game, which isn't great.
While Green Bay's defense has disappointed, the San Francisco 49ers defense has been absolutely fantastic. They are giving up the fewest amount of points per game and they also have the top run defense in the entire league.
Even their secondary, which was supposed to be extremely weak this year, has been playing exceptionally. Carlos Rogers looks like one of the best free-agent signings of the 2011 offseason.
Green Bay may have more overall talent on their defense, but San Francisco's defense is playing otherworldly right now.
Advantage: San Francisco
Coaching
3 of 7Mike McCarthy and Jim Harbaugh are two of the best coaches in the NFL right now. McCarthy is coming off a Super Bowl and has his team currently undefeated while Harbaugh has his team playing out of their minds right now.
These two are so close, it is almost a tie. However, one must be chosen and I'm giving the nod to Harbaugh.
What he has done with Alex Smith is simply amazing. He hasn't turned Smith into Tom Brady or Peyton Manning, but he has turned him into a winner. That is something that no one thought possible.
Flip a coin on which coach has the advantage. I did and it landed on Harbaugh.
Advantage: San Francisco
Strength of Schedule
4 of 7There are two ways that we will look at the strength of schedule for the San Francisco 49ers and the Green Bay Packers.
First, we will look at their opponents' combined wins on the year. San Francisco's opponents have won 26 games, while the Packers' opponents have only won 20 games.
The second way we will look at it is by which teams they have played have a legitimate shot at making the playoffs. For Green Bay, the New Orleans Saints, Chicago Bears and Atlanta Falcons are the only teams with a real chance at the playoffs.
For the 49ers, you have the Dallas Cowboys, Cincinnati Bengals, Philadelphia Eagles, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Detroit Lions all having a legitimate chance at the playoffs.
Both strength-of-schedule breakdowns go to San Francisco.
Advantage: San Francisco
Confidence
5 of 7This was another close category for these two teams. Both teams have a combined record of 13-1. The Green Bay Packers have won seven straight games and the San Francisco 49ers have won five straight games.
While San Francisco must be full of confidence because of how solidly they are playing right now, I don't believe that there is a team out there that is as confident in themselves as Green Bay.
They are coming off a Super Bowl victory and even with a giant bullseye on their back, they haven't faltered yet.
It's always difficult to play at such a high level for such a long time, and the Packers are making it look easy.
Advantage: Green Bay
Potential of Greatness
6 of 7Our final analysis will be the potential of greatness for both teams.
With the Green Bay Packers, even though they are undefeated, you have to feel like they haven't even reached their potential yet. While their offense has been nearly unstoppable, there is still room for improvement.
Plus, with all the talent on the defensive side of the football, you just know that they have to play better sooner than later.
On the other hand, the San Francisco 49ers appear to have reached their full potential. I'm not saying that is a bad thing because their potential is a 6-1 record, but they look like they are already playing at their highest level.
When you think of Green Bay actually being able to get better, you have to like their overall potential.
Advantage: Green Bay
Conclusion
7 of 7Final Score: San Francisco 3, Green Bay 3
Look, I'm a diehard fan of the Green Bay Packers, but the truth is that the San Francisco 49ers are every bit as good as Green Bay.
They aren't better, but if you were to have these two teams play each other 10 times, I could almost guarantee that each team would win five games.
Not only are these two teams the top two teams in the NFC, but they are the top two teams in the entire NFL.
