NFL Predictions Week 6: Cowboys vs. Patriots and Games Sure to Be Shootouts

Mike ChiariOct 16, 2011

There's nothing quite like an all-out shootout in the NFL. Defense wins championships and all that jazz, but I would rather watch a 45-44 game than a 10-9 game any day of the week.

With the passing game more important than ever, we are lucky enough to witness multiple high-scoring affairs on a weekly basis. With many high-powered offenses facing each other this weekend, there should be quite a few shootouts in Week 6 as well.

Here are three games that should feature plenty of offense on Sunday.

Buffalo Bills vs. New York Giants

Surprisingly, the Buffalo Bills are 4-1 and feature one of the most explosive offenses in the entire NFL. Their defense is a different story, though, meaning that their game against the New York Giants should feature plenty of offensive fireworks this weekend.

The Bills surrender massive amounts of yardage through the air and on the ground, so New York's balanced offense should have a pretty big day. Buffalo has a particularly hard time with slot receivers so I look for quarterback Eli Manning to find Victor Cruz early and often.

On the other side of the ledger, the Giants' defense is still beat up by injuries and vulnerable to a strong offense like Buffalo's. The Bills are equally adept at passing with Ryan Fitzpatrick and running with Fred Jackson, so the scoreboard should get lit up in this one.

Perhaps the most surprising individual in the NFL this season has been Carolina Panthers rookie quarterback Cam Newton. Many were unsure if Newton's skills would translate to the NFL at all, but he has already proven to be one of the league's better quarterbacks as he is among the league leaders in passing yards.

He has a fantastic matchup against an Atlanta Falcons secondary that has surrendered a great deal of yardage through the air this season. The Falcons are no slouches on offense either as quarterback Matt Ryan and wide receiver Roddy White lead an impressive aerial attack.

The Falcons may do most of their damage on the ground with running back Michael Turner, though, as the Panthers have one of the worst run defenses in football. When you combine two high-powered offenses and two struggling defenses, you most definitely get a shootout.

In a game that will pit perhaps the two most talented offenses in the league, the New England Patriots will host the Dallas Cowboys.

The Patriots' passing offense is as good as it ever has been behind the arm of quarterback Tom Brady and pass catching of receiver Wes Welker who seems fully recovered from his ACL tear two seasons ago.

The Dallas Cowboys are oozing with offensive ability as well with Tony Romo under center and a host of weapons including Miles Austin, Dez Bryant and Jason Witten. At times the Cowboys seem unable to put it all together, but New England's porous pass defense should help in that regard.

There isn't likely to be much defense or running the ball in this one, so we can expect a full aerial assault, which is the best kind of shootout. Whichever team ends up with the ball last could very well end up with the win as well.
