New Kyrie Irving Trade Rumors Reveal Rivals 'Wonder Aloud' About Mavs Star's Availability

Despite the Dallas Mavericks declaring that they plan to retain star point guard Kyrie Irving during the 2026-27 season, it sounds like other teams aren't convinced they will keep their word.

According to NBA insider Marc Stein, rival teams "continue to wonder aloud about how firmly Dallas will stick to that stance once the season begins and the next in-season trade deadline on Feb. 11 gradually approaches."

Upon his hiring in May, new Mavs president of basketball operations Masai Ujiri made it clear that the team hoped to have Irving leading the way alongside 2025 No. 1 pick and reigning NBA Rookie of the Year Cooper Flagg.

"There's a huge curiosity in our minds to see how Kyrie fits playing with Flagg," Ujiri said at the time. "He's just that kind of incredible talent and player. And I think we owe that to this organization."

When the Mavs hired Dusty May as their new head coach the following month, May also declared that he was looking forward to working with Irving.

"Kyrie knows what it takes to win a championship, so as a first-time NBA coach, I'm gonna lean on him in a lot of areas," May told reporters in June.

Still, it's hard to argue that Irving is Dallas' biggest trade asset as the team continues its rebuild. The nine-time All-Star missed the entire 2025-26 season while recovering from a torn ACL, but it can be expected that he's looking to return in top form during the upcoming campaign.

If the Mavs struggle to find success during the start of the 2026-27 season, they could become more open to the idea of trading Irving for the right offer.
