NFL Power Rankings: Cleveland Browns and the 5 Teams Hurt Most by QB Play

Zach KruseOct 4, 2011

If we've learned anything through four weeks of NFL football, it's that this game we love so much has quickly turned into an aerial, passing-heavy league.

The best teams have the best quarterbacks. It's really that simple. When you look at the bottom of the league, the same principle holds true.

These bottom teams have really been held back by poor quarterback play.

Cleveland Browns

Anytime you're dropping back to throw 61 times and you only score 13 points, there are some problems.

That's what happened Sunday for Colt McCoy and the Browns against the Tennessee Titans. Throwing 97-yard interceptions isn't a way to win football games, either.

McCoy hasn't even started his 15th game in the NFL yet, so it's not too much of a stretch to think that he's going to have more struggles moving forward.

Seattle Seahawks

It wasn't too difficult to envision the Seahawks having problems at quarterback when they signed Tarvaris Jackson to a two-year deal this offseason and then gave him the keys to the offense.

He played better in the second half against the Falcons, but that's his first decent half of football of 2011—and we're four games in. Maybe it's something he can build on, but I wouldn't bank on it.

Jackson has been a career backup, and there's a reason for it.

Jacksonville Jaguars

I still don't fault the Jags for letting David Garrard go, but they left themselves with a mess at that position after the veteran was sent packing.

Luke McCown had one of the worst games you'll see from a quarterback against the Jets (6-of-19, 59 yards, 4 INTs, 1.8 passer rating). They then turned over the offense to first-round pick Blaine Gabbert, who now has five turnovers in two NFL starts.

Last in the NFL in passing offense (550 yards), it's still probably going to get worse before it gets better in Jacksonville.

Indianapolis Colts

I think most knew that the Colts were in trouble if Peyton Manning ever went down, but it really took it happening to realize how bad it could be at the quarterback position.

After having a guy there who consistently put up passer ratings in the 90s and 100s, the Colts now sit at 72.9 through four games, which is third-to-last in the NFL.

Minnesota Vikings

Vikings quarterback Donovan McNabb has tallied just 155 yards per game of passing offense, which is second-worst in the NFL.

There really isn't much of an excuse for it, either, especially considering the Vikings have one of the most feared running backs in the NFL in Adrian Peterson.

McNabb is just out of gas, and it's only a matter of time before Christian Ponder is taking snaps in Minnesota. That's when the real growing pains at quarterback will begin for Vikings fans.
