LeBron James Trade Rumors: Cavaliers Star Has Not Requested Move Amid Struggles

Tim DanielsFeb 6, 2018

The Cleveland Cavaliers reportedly have not broached the idea of trading LeBron James despite the team's recent struggles and the superstar forward's uncertain future.

On Tuesday, Jason Lloyd of The Athletic reported no one from the Cavs organization has asked James or his agent, Rich Paul, about the potential of him waiving his no-trade clause. Likewise, the four-time NBA MVP has not asked the front office to move him before Thursday's trade deadline.

Shams Charania‏ of Yahoo Sports noted earlier Tuesday the 33-year-old Ohio native is "determined to see [the] year through in Cleveland" and wouldn't waive the no-trade clause.

Offseason Moves Sure To Backfire 💥

None of the information comes as a surprise, but the fact potentially moving LeBron has even become part of the discussion showcases the Cavaliers' growing problems.

They have lost 12 of their 18 games since Christmas Day, including a blowout loss at home to the Houston Rockets on Saturday.

Further complicating their effort to get back on track, power forward Kevin Love suffered a broken bone in his hand last week, which is expected to sideline him for around two months.

In addition, the Cavs may need their main trade asset, the Brooklyn Nets' unprotected 2018 first-round draft pick they acquired from the Boston Celtics in the Kyrie Irving deal, to start a rebuild in the offseason. That's because James can decline his player option for the 2018-19 season to become an unrestricted free agent in July.

While James hasn't publicly tipped his hand about future plans, the issues Cleveland has dealt with throughout this season can't help the team's chances of retaining him.

He wouldn't comment Saturday when asked whether the front office needed to make a deal, per Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com.

"I'm a player and that's it," James said. "That's not a question for me. I show up to work every day. I bust my tail every day. I'm the first one to get to the gym and I'm one of the last ones to leave. I do my part. I control what I can control and that is what I can control."

James won't be traded before the deadline, but he could be on the move as a free agent in a few months, especially if the Cavaliers' downward spiral continues.
