Otis Smith, Kings Reportedly Meeting to Discuss VP of Basketball Operations Job
The Sacramento Kings have reportedly met with former Orlando Magic general manager Otis Smith as they look to fill their vacant vice president of basketball operations position, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.
Scott Perry, who formerly held that position, took over as the general manager of the New York Knicks this summer.
Smith, 53, served as Orlando's general manager from 2006 to 2012. He agreed to part ways with the team in the same summer Stan Van Gundy was fired as head coach and Dwight Howard was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers.
The team went 299-177 during Smith's tenure and advanced to the 2009 NBA Finals. They reached the postseason in all six seasons he was in Orlando. Smith, however, was unable to surround Howard with a complementary roster capable of winning an NBA title.
He has since spent two seasons with the Detroit Pistons organization, both with the G League's Grand Rapids Drive and as an assistant on Van Gundy's staff this past year.
If hired in Sacramento, he would serve as the "No. 2 executive to report to general manager Vlade Divac," per Wojnarowski.
