Lakers Rumors: Rajon Rondo Met with Magic Johnson in Los Angeles on Tuesday

Alec NathanJul 11, 2017

Rajon Rondo met Tuesday with Los Angeles Lakers president of basketball operations Magic Johnson as the free-agent point guard continues to explore his options on the open market, according to ESPN.com's Adrian Wojnarowski.

On June 2, ESPN.com's Ramona Shelburne reported the Lakers would give "strong consideration" to signing Rondo.

Rondo, 31, was waived by the Chicago Bulls shortly before the start of free agency, and he immediately became an intriguing potential addition for teams in need of a veteran leader.

As ESPN.com's Ian Begley noted, "young players in Sacramento and Chicago have raved about Rondo's mentorship and his ability to assist with player development."

Rondo's also still a capable contributor, as his time with the Bulls proved.

In 69 appearances during the 2016-17 season, he averaged 7.8 points, 6.7 assists, 5.1 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game while shooting 40.8 percent from the field and a career-high 37.6 percent from three. Rondo also averaged a robust 11.5 points, 10.0 dimes and 8.5 boards in two playoff games against the Boston Celtics before he missed the remainder of the postseason with a broken thumb.

Aside from Rondo, the Lakers also met with Kentavious Caldwell-Pope on Tuesday, according to ESPN.com's Brian Windhorst.

The 24-year-old became an unrestricted free agent Friday when the Detroit Pistons renounced his rights, and Wojnarowski reported at the time the Lakers were interested in signing him to a "one-year balloon deal," which would preserve their salary cap flexibility.
