Celtics Reportedly Trying to Trade for No. 7 Overall Pick in 2017 NBA Draft
Michael Scotto of Basketball Insiders reported Thursday that the Boston Celtics are attempting to acquire the No. 7 overall pick in the 2017 NBA draft from the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Although Scotto didn't provide potential details, ESPN's Ian Begley reported that Boston offered the New York Knicks the No. 3 overall pick, a player and another lottery pick if one could be secured in a separate deal for Kristaps Porzingis.
Boston already holds the No. 3 overall pick in the 2017 NBA draft after trading down from No. 1 with the Philadelphia 76ers.
The Celtics also own the Brooklyn Nets' first-round pick in 2018, as well as the Los Angeles Lakers' provided it lands between No. 2 and No. 5.
General manager Danny Ainge has been stockpiling assets for the past several years, and he also built a team that finished first in the Eastern Conference and reached the Eastern Conference Finals last season.
Kansas forward Josh Jackson and Duke forward Jayson Tatum figure to be Boston's top options with the No. 3 overall pick, while Florida State forward Jonathan Isaac, Kentucky guard Malik Monk, NC State guard Dennis Smith Jr. and Arizona forward Lauri Markkanen are possibilities if the Celtics acquire and keep the seventh pick.
Prying the seventh pick away from Minnesota could be difficult, though, since it stands to add another promising talent to a core that includes Karl-Anthony Towns, Andrew Wiggins, Zach LaVine, Ricky Rubio and Kris Dunn.
