The result was a surprise, since Naomi entered Tuesday night holding the SmackDown Women's Championship. However, Daniel Bryan explained she had to relinquish the title because her knee injury would preclude her from giving Bliss her contractually obligated rematch within 30 days of winning the belt, courtesy of WWE:
The injury came during Naomi's victory over Bliss at Elimination Chamber on Feb. 12. Naomi hit her split-legged moonsault to pick up the victory, and the 29-year-old veteran became a champion in WWE for the first time.
The former Funkadactyl made her main roster debut in 2012, and while she received a handful of title opportunities in the years since then, Elimination Chamber represented her best and most realistic chance to win, and she took advantage of it.
Her triumph wasn't without a casualty in the form of the knee injury, but Naomi made it clear on SmackDown that it wouldn't slow her down, according to WWE's official Twitter account:
Bliss confronted Naomi on the SmackDown following Elimination Chamber and claimed that the new champ was feigning the injury to get out of granting her a rematch.
That resulted in Alexa laying down the ultimatum of Naomi giving her a title shot the next week or simply handing the championship back to her.
Bliss appeared on Talking Smack after that exchange and expressed the utmost confidence that she would get the Women's Championship back on the road to WrestleMania:
Naomi being forced to surrender the title is even more painful due to the fact that WrestleMania 33 is being held in Orlando, which is close to her hometown of Sanford, Florida.
She discussed the importance of walking down the aisle with the title in tow at the Showcase of Immortals, while Alexa was committed to playing the role of spoiler.
While Bliss is the new champion, the WrestleMania landscape is still very much unsettled in the SmackDown women's division.
Depending on how Naomi recovers, she and Bliss may even be at odds again with the title hanging in the balance in a little over a month in Orlando.
