Patrick Ewing Speaks on Potentially Interviewing for Knicks' Head Coaching Job
Patrick Ewing is among the greatest players to ever suit up for the New York Knicks, and the Hall of Famer wants a chance to coach them.
According to Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News, the 53-year-old 11-time All-Star made it clear Wednesday night he would welcome a chance to interview for New York's job during the offseason: "You know, this is a great fit for me. I have my number up there [in the Madison Square Garden rafters]. I still live in the area. If I get an opportunity for an interview I'd be happy."
Ewing is currently the associate head coach for the Charlotte Hornets, who handily defeated the Knicks 111-97 Wednesday:
The 1985 No. 1 overall selection in the NBA draft previously spent time as an assistant with the Washington Wizards, Houston Rockets and Orlando Magic.
Despite his experience, Ewing acknowledged he hasn't received many looks as a potential head coaching candidate: "I've been doing this, what, 13 years now? I see people who don't have the same amount on their resume as I do and still have gotten opportunities."
The Knicks fired head coach Derek Fisher earlier in the season and replaced him with Kurt Rambis on an interim basis.
New York is 31-48 overall despite having Carmelo Anthony and surprising rookie Kristaps Porzingis. The Knicks have gone 8-17 under Rambis, though Marc Stein and Ian Begley of ESPN.com reported Wednesday that team president Phil Jackson is interested in making him the full-time coach.
Rambis has a career winning percentage of .283 in parts of four seasons as an NBA head coach with the Los Angeles Lakers, Minnesota Timberwolves and Knicks.
Jackson's affection for running the triangle offense led to Fisher's hiring (and initial interest in Steve Kerr before he signed with the Golden State Warriors). It's unclear what offense the Knicks will run next season or if Ewing has any interest in implementing the triangle.
