Derrick Rose Comments on Blurred Vision After Win vs. Cavaliers

Mike ChiariOct 28, 2015

Point guard Derrick Rose helped lead the Chicago Bulls to a huge season-opening win over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday night, but the oft-injured superstar admitted he is nowhere near 100 percent.

Rose underwent surgery Sept. 30 to repair an orbital fracture suffered after taking an elbow in practice. The 2011 NBA MVP was able to return for Chicago's preseason finale and regular-season opener; however, he has been forced to make some adjustments.

According to ESPN.com's Nick Friedell, Rose revealed he has double vision in his left eye following the Bulls' 97-95 victory.

"I wish it was a blink, but it's all the time," Rose said. "Like right now, I see two of you."

The 27-year-old Rose—who has been forced to wear a protective mask—also explained the manner in which he has handled his vision problems on the court, per Friedell.

"When I'm out there playing, I'm only using one of my eyes," Rose said. "I close my left eye whenever I'm out there. So I just got used to it from practice."

Despite being at a disadvantage, the eye injury didn't seem to limit Rose significantly, as he scored 18 points and dished out a team-high five assists in 32 minutes.

Bulls head coach Fred Hoiberg understands the obstacles Rose is facing, but he believes the three-time All-Star can cancel them out to some degree by being aggressive on the offensive end, according to Friedell.

"

I think he sees three baskets right now. I told him, "Aim for the middle one." That's part of it right now -- the depth perception. It's probably still a little bit off. He's still out there working on [3s], shooting them, but we want him to be aggressive getting to the basket and making plays for his teammates.

"

Rose being compromised by an injury is nothing new, but the fact that he is able to play through this one is huge considering how much time he has missed in recent years.

Knee ailments have dogged him, costing him the entire 2012-13 season and all but 10 games in 2013-14. He also missed an additional 31 contests last season, so having him on the court in any capacity is huge for the Bulls.

Chicago is a talented team that can enjoy plenty of success as Rose continues to heal thanks to a roster that includes the likes of Jimmy Butler, Pau Gasol, Joakim Noah and Nikola Mirotic.

The Bulls are an entirely different team when Rose is at his best, though, which means they have all the makings of a title contender provided his vision improves and he is once again able to attack the game of basketball with little or no limitations.
