Kelly Comments on Mathews' Potential Return
Monday, Oct. 26
Eagles head coach Chip Kelly said "we'll see" if Mathews is able to play against the Cowboys. Kelly added Mathews was hurt on a 22-yard run, per Matt Lombardo of NJ Advance Media.
Mathews Unable to Shake Injury Bug
This ailment is concerning since Mathews was dealing with a groin issue leading up to Philadelphia's Week 6 matchup with the New York Giants, but he managed to play. He's just a year removed from a 2014 season that saw him miss 10 games due to knee, ankle and shoulder injuries.
Mathews managed to rip off a 63-yard touchdown thereafter and racked up 97 yards on only six carries against Carolina.
The sixth-year veteran, who was brought into Philadelphia in the offseason, was expected to be fellow new signing DeMarco Murray's backup. But in a system that has limited Murray's touches and production, Mathews has seen some playing time, including a 24-rush, 108-yard performance against the New York Jets in Week 3.
In fact, NFL.com's Marc Sessler saw Mathews as the better of both Eagles running backs after several weeks:
Mathews' performance in Week 7 was certainly better than Murray's, as the latter, the reigning NFL rushing champion, managed a mere 65 yards on 18 carries. Mathews is clearly an important cog in the Eagles offense at this point in the season.
