Denarius Moore, Billy Cundiff to Bills: Latest Contract Details and Reaction

Mike ChiariOct 7, 2015

The Buffalo Bills continued to shake up their roster Wednesday with a pair of additions as they signed wide receiver Denarius Moore and kicker Billy Cundiff to the 53-man roster.

According to Chris Brown of BuffaloBills.com, the team released kick returner Marcus Thigpen and kickoff specialist Jordan Gay to make room for the new signees.

Despite consecutive seasons of hitting at least 89 percent of his field goal attempts with the Bills, kicker Dan Carpenter has been on the hot seat since the preseason as a hamstring injury negatively impacted his performance.

The poor showings have spilled over into the regular season, though, as the 29-year-old veteran has missed an extra point and two of his seven field-goal attempts, including a 30-yarder in Buffalo's Week 4 loss to the New York Giants.

After that short-range miss, Bills head coach Rex Ryan was noncommittal about Carpenter's future with the team, according to Tyler Dunne of the Buffalo News:

The 35-year-old Cundiff has had stints with five different teams since entering the NFL in 2002, including his most recent foray with the Cleveland Browns in 2013 and 2014.

Cundiff made just 75.9 percent of his field goals in 13 games last season, although he was named to the Pro Bowl and the All-Pro First Team in 2010 with the Baltimore Ravens.

It is unclear if Cundiff will become Buffalo's primary kicker over Carpenter, but it seems likely that he will take over the kickoff duties at the very least with Gay out of the picture.

Regardless of the situation, Cundiff's agent, Paul Sheehy of ProStar Sports, believes Buffalo is a good fit for his client:

Moore spent the first four seasons of his NFL career with the Oakland Raiders, and his best season came in 2012 when he set career highs with 51 catches for 741 yards and seven touchdowns. His numbers bottomed out at 12 receptions for 115 yards and no scores last year, but he has shown flashes of brilliance in the past.

With No. 1 receiver Sammy Watkins nursing a calf injury that kept him out of Week 4, Moore provides the Bills with some depth at the outside skill positions.

The 2-2 Bills will travel to Tennessee to take on the Titans in Week 5, and they will have no shortage of new faces after also signing running back Dan "Boom" Herron Tuesday, with LeSean McCoy dealing with a hamstring injury and rookie Karlos Williams working his way through a concussion.

Buffalo is significantly banged up currently, but general manager Doug Whaley has done his part by bringing in some recognizable reinforcements to bridge the gap.
