New Zealand's Ryan Fox is now the third player to make men's major history at The Open Championship.

Fox hit an eight-under 62 in Saturday's third round at Royal Birkdale to tie the major championship record for a lowest single-round score.

Lucas Herbert and Sam Burns previously tied the record with matching scores of eight-under 62 in Friday's second round.

Fox finished Saturday at 8-under par to grab a share of the lead with Herbert, who tees off Round 3 at 3:50 p.m. ET.

He tied the record for the lowest single-round men's major score after hitting seven straight threes, including five under par, on his first eight holes.

Fox stumbled with a bogey on the par-4 13th hole, but bounced back with three birdies on his next four holes to recover and match the record.

Fox is seeking the first major championship victory of his career. His previous highest finish at a major came when he tied for 19th at the 2025 U.S. Open.

After missing the cut at the Masters this year, Fox tied for 35th at the PGA Championship and 23rd at the U.S. Open. His best results of the season came with top-10 finishes at The Genesis Invitational and RBC Canadian Open.

Should Fox claim victory at Royal Birkdale, he would become the first New Zealander since Bob Charles in 1963 to claim victory at The Open.

For now, Fox will join Herbert and Burns on a short list of players to have finished a major championship round in just 62 strokes.

Seven players have achieved the feat eight times, with two of those instances belonging to Xander Schauffele (2023 U.S. Open, 2024 PGA Championship).

Other names on the list include Branden Grace (2017 British Open), Rickie Fowler (2023 U.S. Open) and Shane Lowry (2024 PGA Championship).

This marks the first time three players have hit the mark in the same event. Of that list, only Fowler and Schauffele (two times) went on to win their respective tournaments.

Three players could now get the chance to follow in Fowler and Schauffele's footsteps as The Open wraps up Sunday in England.
