Minutes after Herbert's round ended, Sam Burns holed out from a green-side bunker to finish with a 62 of his own.

Burns shot three-over 73 in the first round on Thursday, but a strong finish on the back nine allowed him to join Herbert in making history in Friday's second round. He didn't have a single bogey and recorded six of his eight birdies on the back nine, including three straight on the final three holes.

Herbert had the chance to break the single-round scoring record, but he recorded his first bogey of the day on the 18th hole.

Herbert opened Friday's second round with a scorching start, recording back-to-back-to-back birdies on the first three holes. He added three more birdies to tie the lowest nine-hole score in Open Championship history.

Herbert didn't slow down on the back nine, recording three more birdies before the bogey at 18.

Rankedย 97th in the world, Herbert has never finished higher than 13th in a major championship. His lone PGA Tour win came at the 2021 Bermuda Championship, and he owns three wins on the DP World Tour. He also won the LIV Golf Virginia tournament this past May.

Burns is rankedย 18th in the worldย and is a five-time PGA Tour winner, with his last victory coming in 2023. He has four career top-10 finishes in major championships, including a runner-up finish at this year's U.S. Open.

After making history on Friday, Herbert and Burns have put themselves in a position to contend for the first major title of their respective careers.
