Bill Belichick's Hot Seat Discussed by CFB Insider, 'It's a Mess' at UNC Entering 2026 CFB Season

There are concerns surrounding North Carolina head coach Bill Belichick's job security at the beginning of the 2026 college football season.

"I'd be shocked if he's coaching there next year," an industry source told Bruce Feldman of The Athletic. "It's a mess there with Lombardi and his son."

The Tar Heels are entering their second season with Belichick patrolling the sidelines after wrapping up a 4-8 finish in 2025.

North Carolina football general manager Michael Lombardi has been on paid administrative leave since July 27, while defensive coordinator Steve Belichick took a medical leave on Aug. 6 and has yet to return.

On3.com's Pete Nakos reported Thursday that Steve is not expected to be with the team for the start of the 2026 season. Bill is set to handle defensive play-calling duties in his absence.

The elder Belichick signed a five-year contract worth $50 million to join the Tar Heels after the 2024 season, but only the first three years of the deal are guaranteed.

If North Carolina isn't able to rise up the ACC standings in 2026, a head coaching change may be on the horizon.

For now, the Tar Heels will open the regular season with a clash against TCU on Saturday. Kickoff is at 12 p.m. ET.
