WWE NXT Results: Winners, Grades, Reaction and Highlights from July 29
Tag team wrestling was the name of the game Wednesday night, as NXT invaded the WWE Network airwaves with a huge tag title match, pitting Buddy Murphy and Wesley Blake against The Vaudevillains. But that championship clash was hardly the only bout that had a direct impact on the division.
Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder scored the biggest win of their time as partners, defeating former No. 1 contenders Enzo Amore and Colin Cassady.
Then there was Chad Gable and Jason Jordan, who continued to use their amateur wrestling skills to score a victory in an enhancement bout.
In non-tag team action, Charlotte looked to end her vendetta with Dana Brooke in a grudge match, while Kevin Owens demonstrated just how dangerous a competitor he still is, despite his recent defeats.
To some, the July 29 show played out like one designed to be a placeholder on the road to SummerSlam.
In retrospect weeks from now, fans may very well look back at this week's broadcast as one that sets the table for one of the most talented tag team divisions in wrestling.
Enzo Amore and Colin Cassady vs. Dash Wilder and Scott Dawson
1 of 6
Two teams with championship aspirations jockeyed for position Wednesday night, as Enzo Amore and "Big Cass" Colin Cassady squared off with Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder, known collectively as The Mechanics.
The heels isolated Amore, something that is typical of matches involving the New Jersey native. Wilder charged at him but crashed shoulder-first into the steel post, igniting the babyface comeback.
Big Cass exploded into the ring, while Carmella slapped Amore awake at ringside.
The Rocket Launcher finisher was countered, and the heels scored the Shatter Machine (think popup Codebreaker) for the upset win.
Result
Dash Wilder and Scott Dawson defeated Enzo Amore and Big Cass.
Grade
B
Analysis
It has been a long while since a new threat to the tag titles was introduced to the picture, so Wilder and Dawson's victory was a welcome addition.
Unfortunately, it came at the expense of Amore and Big Cass, who are the most over team on the show and probably deserve a run with the titles at this point.
The entire segment's silver lining is that, for the first time in weeks, the tag team division feels fresh, exciting and furthered.
Baron Corbin vs. Jesse Sorensen
2 of 6
You may remember Mr. Sorensen from TNA Wrestling.
Corbin walked to the ring. He delivered End of Days and pinned his opponent for the win.
Match time: 22 seconds.
Result
Baron Corbin pinned Jesse Sorensen.
Grade
F
Analysis
It was an "F" grade last week, and it will continue to be a "F" grade as long as management keeps booking the former Arizona Cardinal in the same boring, repetitive squash matches fans grew so tired of months ago.
Sorensen deserved a better chance to prove himself than this.
It was a waste of ring time, in all imaginable ways.
Levis Valenzuela Jr. and Elias Samson vs. Chad Gable and Jason Jordan
3 of 6
The tag team renaissance continued this week, with Chad Gable and Jason Jordan returning to the NXT Arena to battle.
Gable dominated action early, employing a smile as he completely outclassed his opposition in what was a nice touch to his act.
Jordan tagged in late before he and Gable delivered the Grand Amplitude (double belly-to-back suplex) for the win.
Result
Jason Jordan and Chad Gable defeated Elias Samson and Levis Valenzuela Jr.
Grade
C+
Analysis
This was a fun squash match to watch, as Jordan and Gable continue to jell as a tag team, working over their opponents in a way that is not totally dissimilar to Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin just over a decade ago.
Gable has the potential to be a special talent, someone who gets the intricacies of the performance as much as he does the actual in-ring work.
This was another fine example of NXT prepping for a time when Enzo and Big Cass may not be around.
Charlotte vs. Dana Brooke
4 of 6Charlotte may have finally been called up to the main roster, but she had unfinished business with Dana Brooke in NXT. Wednesday night, the second-generation Diva returned to her stomping grounds and battled the fitness model in a match that has been building for months.
Emma's early distraction proved ineffective, but Brooke was able to slow down the match pace and use her strength advantage to fuel her attack on her rival. She worked her over with some mat-based submission holds.
Charlotte mounted the comeback, delivered a spear and neckbreaker and scored the win with Natural Selection.
Result
Charlotte defeated Dana Brooke.
Grade
C
Analysis
Dana is still significantly green, but she did not look completely lost or out of place sharing the ring with the former NXT women's champion.
Charlotte did not necessarily need the win, especially having moved up to the main roster, but this was a fine way to say goodbye to one of the most talented, homegrown stars the brand has produced.
Where Dana and Emma will go from here is a mystery, as they have been beaten to the point of ineffectiveness. A strong program and a series of meaningful wins will be needed to convince casual fans to care about them going forward.
Kevin Owens in Action
5 of 6The No. 1 contender to the NXT Championship, Kevin Owens, was in action Wednesday night, just weeks from his final opportunity to regain the title he held with pride for so long.
Danny Burch made his return to Full Sail University...only for Owens to dismantles and demolish him. Owens defeated him with the popup powerbomb and solidified his status as a major threat to Finn Balor's title reign.
An apron powerbomb followed the bell.
Result
Kevin Owens pinned Danny Burch.
Grade
D-
Analysis
This was Kevin Owens' first win in weeks.
Think about that for a moment.
After being built up for weeks as the year's biggest breakout star, Owens needed a victory over Danny Burch—or Martin Stone (or whatever else they are calling the British star)—to get back to his winning ways.
This match did what it was intended to: reminding the NXT faithful of just how dangerous and explosive a competitor Owens is ahead of his huge title opportunity.
NXT Tag Team Title Match: The Vaudevillains vs. Buddy Murphy and Wesley Blake
6 of 6The Vaudevillains earned this week's tag team championship bout by defeating Enzo Amore and Colin Cassady.
Aiden English and Simon Gotch controlled the early portion to start, but it was only a matter of time before the champions gained the upper hand.
Blake and Murphy isolated and worked over English, proving why they are the champions.
Gotch received the hot tag and unleashed on the champions. Chants of "Oh my Gotch" filled the NXT Arena, and the challengers seemed poised to cash in on their big opportunity and win the gold.
Alexa Bliss grabbed English's leg, though, breaking up a Whirling Dervish attempt.
Blake scored a rollup for the win.
After the match, the Vaudevillains cleaned house and offered to hold the ropes for Bliss but saw their chivalry answered with slaps.
Result
Buddy Murphy and Wesley Blake defeated The Vaudevillains to retain their titles.
Grade
B
Analysis
This was a better-than-average tag match that saw The Vaudevillains impress, only to see opportunistic and cheating champions dash their championship aspirations.
The addition of Bliss has helped the champions infinitely, as fans now have a reason to despise them.
Gotch as the recipient of the hot tag rather than English works so much better than the other way around, something that was on display Wednesday night.
This was a really fun match to close out this week's broadcast.
