WWE Raw Results: Biggest Winners, Losers and Moments from July 27
Few could have imagined that a full decade into his run as the franchise star of WWE, John Cena would be having what is arguably his finest year from an in-ring perspective.
On Monday night, though, he added yet another gem to his resume, defending the United States Championship against world heavyweight champion Seth Rollins despite suffering a broken nose.
The biggest winner from this week's show thanks to his unrivaled toughness and the latest in a long line of stellar title defenses, Cena has undoubtedly been one of the bright spots in what has otherwise proved to be a turbulent year for Vince McMahon's wrestling empire.
The pride and joy of West Newbury, Massachusetts, was hardly the only major winner from Monday's broadcast, though.
Current NXT women's champion Sasha Banks scored arguably her biggest victory to date, Summer Rae continued to prove why she is the only bright spot in the current Lana-Rusev storyline and Becky Lynch earned herself a shot at Nikki Bella on SmackDown with a win on a Divas-heavy episode of Raw.
But not everyone was as lucky as the aforementioned stars. There were a few notable losers as well.
Who were they, and why were they losers? Why were the aforementioned ladies winners?
Let's take a look.
Loser: Rusev
The Bulgarian Brute has proved he is quite capable on the microphone and has developed into one of the better heavyweight workers in the industry.
His current storyline with Lana, though, has taken every bit of edge away from the character and left him a blubbering, jealous ex-boyfriend rather than the cold, ruthless assassin he was during his first year on the main roster.
It is a character that will not make anyone money and will contribute mightily to his fall from grace.
After the split from Lana, instead of channeling a nastier, more aggressive competitor, complete with new squeeze Summer Rae by his side, Rusev is a caricature of the jealous, controlling boyfriend. It does no one any favors and will hurt him severely when the time comes to take him seriously again.
Winner: Summer Rae
The lone bright spot in the ongoing saga of Rusev and Lana, Summer Rae continues to make the most of her recent opportunity to star in a high-profile story, coming across as the conniving, unlikable vixen who sees Rusev as someone who can be beneficial to her career.
She has been perfect on the mic, and on Monday night, her performance as the disgraced and humiliated heel hit the right note. She screamed incessantly after having her face rubbed in the dead fish presented to her by her new beau, proving that she can take her comeuppance as well as she can dish out the villainy, something that will be key in the long run.
Summer Rae was the savior to what was another awful segment that proved WWE Creative's ineptitude when trying to craft a story that helps all involved rather than hurting them.
Loser: Neville
The Man That Gravity Forgot is in an unenviable position right now.
Yes, he has finally been given a feud with Stardust to keep him busy, but his character is so underdeveloped that audiences really do not care about the Brit until it is time for him to the scale the ropes for his Red Arrow finisher.
It is a major problem that will continue to plague the former NXT champion until WWE provides fans with a reason to invest emotionally in him. WWE may think it's on its way to doing just that with the Stardust program, but truth be told, it is the villain that is gaining the most from the program as he continues to cut inspired promos while simultaneously coming across as the insane, genius comic-book character the company envisioned.
Neville deserves better but will not get it until he is better defined by the rocket scientists in the writing room.
Winner: Sasha Banks
It would not, by any stretch of the imagination, be hyperbole to say that Sasha Banks is one of the best wrestlers on the WWE roster, regardless of gender. Her body of work over the last year speaks for itself, and on Monday night she added another gem, this one against two-time Divas champion Paige.
Their contest was hard-hitting, dramatic and exciting, capped off with Banks' delivering the Bank Statement for the tapout victory.
The crowd was into the action, and the win proved the biggest of Banks' career.
Unlike some of her fellow Divas, particularly those who did not have the opportunity to come up through NXT, Banks understands the art of wrestling. She gets the psychology, the crowd interaction and the sequencing more than just about any other woman on the roster, making her the premiere in-ring performer of the lot.
While WWE may be focusing on Charlotte and prepping her to battle Nikki Bella for the Divas title at some point down the line, it is Banks who will continue to stand head and shoulders above her peers as the best.
And The Boss.
Winner: Becky Lynch
The Irishwoman scored a big win Monday night in tag team action, forcing a tapout from former Divas champion Alicia Fox and earning herself a SmackDown date with current titleholder Nikki Bella.
Becky was the one NXT Diva who had yet to really leave her mark, thanks to all of the focus put on Sasha Banks and Charlotte to this point, so it was nice to see her given the spotlight on Monday night.
It is likely that she'll drop the match to Nikki on Thursday night, but for now the win gave her a bit of momentum and should help the immensely talented worker continue to get over with the fans who may not be as familiar with her in-ring work as the diehards who tune in to NXT every Wednesday night.
Winner: Luke Harper
The final winner from this week's show is Luke Harper, who spent the tail end of 2014 and most of this year delivering some wildly underrated performances across all WWE television platforms but never really had the full backing of WWE Creative.
On Monday night, he reunited with Bray Wyatt, pledging allegiance and devoting his life to the man who "saved him" on more than one occasion.
Harper is a supremely talented big man who works well with just about everyone. His involvement in the rivalry between Reigns and Wyatt will only allow him to return to relevance and take part in one of the company's premiere feuds.
After being lost in the shuffle for so long, he certainly deserves the exposure.
