Kevin Owens vs. Cesaro Must Be Added to WWE SummerSlam 2015 Card

Graham GSM MatthewsJul 28, 2015

With Brock Lesnar vs. Undertaker and seemingly Seth Rollins vs. John Cena set in stone for SummerSlam, the event is shaping up to be one the biggest blockbusters in ages.

Like any great show, however, it's in need of a strong undercard, and Kevin Owens vs. Cesaro would be a solid addition.

Owens made a major impact upon his WWE arrival in May by immediately targeting the top dog in Cena. At Elimination Chamber, he scored one of the biggest upsets in WWE history when he beat Cena fair and square in the middle of the ring, cementing himself as a star on the rise.

They went on to produce another two classics at Money in the Bank and Battleground, respectively, but he came out on the losing end of both affairs. Ultimately, he failed in his quest to capture the United States Championship and now finds himself without the NXT Championship as well.

Needless to say, where WWE goes next with Owens is crucial.

He was made to look somewhat weak when he tapped out to Cena and walked out of his match the next night on Raw, but his credibility isn't entirely ruined.

All Owens needs right now is a proper program that can help him maintain his momentum, and a rivalry with Cesaro might be just the trick.

Late last month, Cesaro injected himself into the Cena-Owens program by challenging Cena for the United States Championship on the June 23 episode of Raw. In his first attempt, he fell short of victory due to interference from Owens, which seemed to suggest a Triple Threat match could be in the works.

The very next week, Cesaro and Cena stole the show once again, this time in the main event slot. Cena was successful for the second straight week in retaining his title, but that didn't stop Owens from making his presence felt after the match.

With all the run-ins Owens and Cesaro had in the weeks that followed, the seeds appeared to be planted for some sort of multiman match for the belt at SummerSlamalso involving Rusev.

Sadly, those plans were dropped coming out of Battleground when Cena shifted his focus to the WWE World Heavyweight Championship instead.

On the bright side, Owens vs. Cesaro will be continuing, as seen on this week's edition of Raw. Following a heated battle with Randy Orton, the former NXT champion decimated Cesaro after he came out to even the odds against Sheamus.

As of this writing, a match between the two has yet to be confirmed for SummerSlam, but it must be. Adding a certain sense of excitement to the undercard, their match could very well catapult the careers of both men.

According to Bryan Alvarez of Wrestling Observer Live (h/t Wrestle Zone) in a report from last week, WWE didn't have any plans for Owens going forward and didn't see him as a top priority. That might have been before it decided to go ahead with the Cesaro program, but either way, it's clear WWE has no intentions of putting him anywhere near the main event in the foreseeable future.

Although Owens is too talented of a competitor to be knocked down the card, he might as well make the most of his stay in the midcard in the meantime.

Cesaro is the perfect person for him to be mixing it up with, as it's logical from a storyline standpoint and gives them the chance to deliver the matches they're capable of.

As for Cesaro, he, too, is destined for big things in the company if it can stay the course with his push. However, it's imperative that his program with Owens is booked the right way. He can't afford coming out of it worse off than he was before, and the same can be said for Owens.

Far too often in feuds that feature two Superstars who need wins, WWE resorts to having them trade victories. In the end, though, no one benefits and it ends up being a glorified waste of time.

From everything that's been speculated, SummerSlam is looking to be a stacked show from top to bottom, but don't sleep on Cesaro vs. Owens. It's a match that could be one of the night's better bouts and the first of many in-ring encounters to come.
