WWE SummerSlam 2015: Biggest X-Factors to Watch at Massive PPV

Aaron BowerJul 27, 2015

As one of the biggest shows of the year, SummerSlam, which takes place August 26 in New York City, is a pay-per-view that always provides plenty of X-factors for fans.

But with iconic names returning and some mouthwatering title matches in prospect, this year's SummerSlam offers a lot for fans to get excited about.

With a few weeks still to go for WWE to build up the excitement levels, here are what look to be the most noteworthy X-factors at this year's SummerSlam.

Kevin Owens Fighting Cesaro

This isn't set in stone yet, of course, but given the recent meetings between the two, Kevin Owens and Cesaro could be set for an incredible collision at SummerSlam.

Whether it's involved as part of the United States Championship rivalry with John Cena or as a stand-alone match between the two, it promises to be something spectacular.

Owens and Cesaro have both recent history in WWE and a longer-term past in other promotions, as proven by this incredible meeting five years ago (Warning: NSFW language):

Should Owens' future be away from the main event scene over the coming months, then a rivalry with a guy like Cesaro would be perfect for his development.

Cesaro is a guy who is also looking to break into the upper echelons of WWE, and with the prospect of a rivalry lasting a good few months, SummerSlam could be the start of something special.

A Defining Night for Roman Reigns

To describe the majority of 2015 for Roman Reigns as up-and-down would be something of an understatement.

Reigns hasn't been able to catch a break with most WWE fans after his controversial Royal Rumble victory back in January, and his stock has taken a real hit since that night.

But SummerSlam could prove to be a pivotal evening in the career of Reigns, as he seems destined to team up with Sting (and possibly Dean Ambrose) at the show.

Putting Ambrose to one side for a moment, the fact he'll be teaming with someone as iconic as Sting could be the thing that seals a return to popularity.

The fact the show is in New York (a traditionally hostile crowd) will not be lost on WWE putting Reigns and Sting together too, as there would have been a real danger of Reigns getting the wrong kind of reaction had he been competing on his own.

So WWE will be hoping that Sting can help get Reigns over once again, as fan demand to see the WCW icon will be extremely high given his absence since WrestleMania.

Can Lesnar's Own Streak Continue?

Michael Cole made reference to it at Battleground, and Brock Lesnar's unpinned streak could be in serious jeopardy at SummerSlam.

Lesnar hasn't been pinned or submitted in well over two years, dating back to his loss at WrestleMania 29 to Triple H.

But when he faces Undertaker at SummerSlam, there's a possibility that run could come to an end at the hands of the Deadman.

There is, of course, a large sense of irony surrounding Undertaker trying to end a streak after Lesnar infamously destroyed his WrestleMania streak last year.

It seems likely that Taker will get his win back at some point, whether that's at WrestleMania next year or at SummerSlam.

Given how there's no title on the line and the match appears to be a one-off just for SummerSlam, there's the possibility of both Lesnar or Taker winning, which is what makes this so intriguing.
