WWE Battleground 2015: Results That Will Have Biggest Impact at SummerSlam

Donald WoodJul 20, 2015

After a wild pay-per-view, the aftermath of the 2015 edition of WWE’s Battleground will have a deep ripple effect on the marquee SummerSlam special event.

From The Undertaker's surprise return in the WWE World Heavyweight Championship match between Brock Lesnar and Seth Rollins to John Cena's forcing Kevin Owens to tap out, the stage has been set for a wild build to the August PPV.

Here are the results from Battleground 2015 that will have the biggest impact on WWE’s SummerSlam card.

Brock Lesnar and Seth Rollins Fight to a No-Contest

Just when we thought Lesnar was going to suplex Rollins into oblivion and take back his WWE World Heavyweight Championship, Undertaker’s gong hit, the lights fell dark and The Deadman stood in the ring as the lights came back on.

The visual of Undertaker standing toe-to-toe with Brock Lesnar was the moment we’ll all remember, all while the reigning and defending champion slunk away, still holding the title. Rollins performed well in this bout, but all anyone can talk about is Lesnar vs. Undertaker at SummerSlam.

The rematch from the WrestleMania 30 beatdown has many fans ready to see Undertaker get his revenge on Lesnar for taking The Streak, but what about Rollins? Lesnar and Undertaker will be the true main attractions in August, but who will challenge for the WWE title?

There are several viable options—Dean Ambrose, Rusev, Cesaro, Owens, Bray Wyatt or several other Superstars—but this would be the perfect opportunity to book a tournament to crown the new No. 1 contender.

With WWE looking to kill several weeks of Raw and SmackDown programming between Battleground and SummerSlam, an eight-man tournament could play out over three weeks, leaving two full weeks of build leading up to the August PPV.

Tournament or not, it will be very interesting to see what’s next for the world title scene.

John Cena Defeats Kevin Owens via Submission

Forget The Undertaker: The most shocking moment of Battleground was Owens' being forced to submit during his shot at Cena and the United States Championship.

There is no justification for the outcome of this title match.

Cena and Owens have been embroiled in a heated rivalry for weeks, and this was the third time the two men squared off in a singles match that featured a clean finish. The fact that the title did not change hands was bad enough, but watching Owens tap away all of his momentum was hard to watch.

The only hope now is that WWE books a Triple Threat match at SummerSlam featuring Owens, Cena and Cesaro. Owens could at least pin Cesaro and win the U.S. title, since he certainly won’t be pinning the champion again.

Bray Wyatt Defeats Roman Reigns

Arguably the best match on the card Sunday was the in-ring war between Roman Reigns and Bray Wyatt. Few expected this bout to steal the show with Cena vs. Owens and Lesnar vs. Rollins on the card, but it did for many people.

With Reigns being over with the St. Louis crowd and Wyatt understanding how to get himself heat by grinding down his opponent, the resulting matchup was one that told a logical storyline and led to an interesting moment.

That moment also involved outside interference from Luke Harper.

The hope now is that Reigns will be looking for revenge against Wyatt and Harper and call upon his friend Dean Ambrose for the tag team assist. While it is unclear how long Erick Rowan will be out with an injury, the reformation of The Wyatt Family could yield several interesting matchups at SummerSlam.

At the very least, the WWE Universe should expect Reigns and Ambrose vs. Wyatt and Harper in August.

Charlotte Defeats Brie Bella and Sasha Banks

It may not have been announced beforehand, but one of the best matches on the Battleground card was the impromptu Triple Threat match featuring a representative of every stable of women formed last week on Raw.

Watching Charlotte and Sasha Banks go to battle against Brie Bella in a main-roster matchup was a great moment for all the people who have followed the rise of the women’s division in NXT over the last several years.

Charlotte deserved the win after being arguably the best woman in the developmental territory for a long time, but protecting Banks by letting her take the shoulder to the ring post showed that people actually care about the booking of this bout.

The WWE Universe should expect a nine-way Divas battle at SummerSlam.
