WWE Battleground 2015 Matches: Best Possible Finish for Each Contest
WWE's SummerSlam pay-per-view is right around the corner, but first, the biggest and brightest Superstars in sports entertainment take to the squared circle for Sunday night's Battleground, a show that will undoubtedly lay the groundwork for the biggest event of the summer.
With that said, the importance of every match becomes more magnified.
Whether Brock Lesnar or Seth Rollins leaves St. Louis with the WWE World Heavyweight Championship will dictate which direction WWE Creative takes the main event picture in time for the August extravaganza.
How the conclusion of Roman Reigns vs. Bray Wyatt is reached will determine whether they battle one more time inside the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
The manner in which Kevin Owens does or does not defeat John Cena for the United States Championship will decide whether the former NXT champion is cemented as the next big thing in WWE.
With so many questions to be answered and so many finishes affecting the immediate future of the sports entertainment empire, how WWE Creative books Sunday night's show will prove most interesting.
How they should book the show, though, is the question.
You are in luck. The answers lie just inside.
Battle for the Crown: R-Truth vs. King Barrett
1 of 6
King Barrett deserves so much better than this, but considering who is not competing Sunday night, at least he has a spot on the show.
The feud between the 2015 King of the Ring and R-Truth ignited last month at Money in the Bank, when the latter scored an upset victory over Barrett on the Kickoff Show. Since then, Truth has taken to calling himself King What's Up and staking his claim to the King of the Ring title.
Sunday night, he will officially challenge Barrett for the right to wear the crown as the King of the Ring.
Best Finish
The best finish in Sunday's opener would see Barrett deliver the Bullhammer and put away Truth clean in the center of the ring.
The Brit has lost far too much since winning the King of the Ring, and the entire feud with Truth has dragged him down severely. A straight victory over Truth should allow him to regain some momentum and hopefully crawl out of the doldrums of the lower midcard and back into prominence on Raw and SmackDown.
Randy Orton vs. Sheamus
2 of 6
Randy Orton and Sheamus' most recent rivalry was borne of WWE Creative's inability to come up with anything else for them to do. Beginning in the buildup to Money in the Bank, they have taken turns getting the best of each other, brawling around ringside and leaving the other lying.
Unfortunately, there has been little else in the way of the development.
Why are they so angry with each other? What is at stake, other than pride?
Orton returned to the squared circle a few weeks after Money in the Bank and planted the Celtic Warrior with an RKO, setting up Sunday's match. With little reason to care, though, anticipation for the bout between two former heavyweight champions is nowhere near what it should be.
Best Finish
Sheamus is the current Money in the Bank winner and has hardly been pushed like someone on his way to the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. With that said, Orton has fallen off significantly here in 2015, taking a back seat to the younger stars who dominate today's product. WWE loves to protect guys like Orton and John Cena, so the likelihood is that The Viper leaves victorious.
That is not the best finish, though.
To really get the most out of Sheamus as a potential main event villain, he needs to win here.
Countering the RKO by shoving Orton away, then catching him with the Brogue Kick would deliver Sheamus that definitive win that sets him back on the right track.
As long as WWE Creative can resist beating him the next night on Raw.
WWE Tag Team Title Match: Prime Time Players vs. The New Day
3 of 6
The Prime Time Players completed their journey as a tag team last month at Money in the Bank when they finally won the WWE Tag Team Championships, defeating The New Day in what was a tremendous upset at the time.
Since then, Titus O'Neil and Darren Young have enjoyed their reign, picking up wins over their rivals in singles and six-man tag bouts.
Sunday night, they will have to overcome what is sure to be a numbers disadvantage if they are to retain the titles.
The New Day, on the other hand, have had a tumultuous month that saw them dismantled by Brock Lesnar in Tokyo, then lose more than they have won. Luckily for them, they got back to picking up victories Thursday night with a win over the Lucha Dragons.
Can they parlay their rediscovered momentum into a second title reign?
Best Finish
The Prime Time Players are a fun and energetic team but they have done nothing to elevate the tag titles in the way that The New Day did during their reign. More importantly, O'Neil and Young have failed to remain consistently over, even with the titles around their waists.
With that said, Sunday should see The New Day cheat and manipulate their way to another tag title victory, with Big E scoring the fall on Young following interference from Xavier Woods.
The Prime Time Players could continue to chase the titles, but at this point, The New Day is far too over to waste in the role they have filled over the last five weeks.
United States Championship Match: John Cena vs. Kevin Owens
4 of 6
Many thought that Kevin Owens' loss to John Cena at Money in the Bank would somehow hurt his momentum. Instead, that defeat fueled him to be an even better heel. He has continued to be a thorn in the side of Cena, interrupting quality United States Championship Open Challenges to ensure that his rival remains the champion.
He has also targeted Cesaro, who has given Cena two of the best televised matches of the year, and he even cost Rusev a shot at regaining the gold.
Will Owens' actions come back to haunt him Sunday night, or will he do exactly as he promised by winning the U.S. title and beginning a reign of dominance over WWE?
Best Finish
Owens has been protected unlike any other star on the roster since being called up back in June. He has already beaten Cena clean, wrestled two Match of the Year candidates against the franchise player and picked up wins over some of the most talented stars on the roster.
Sunday night should be his coronation, with another clean victory over Cena solidifying his status as one of the legitimate breakout stars of 2015.
A popup powerbomb should bring an end to Cena's reign as champion and start the era of Owens in WWE.
Roman Reigns vs. Bray Wyatt
5 of 6
Bray Wyatt has engaged Roman Reigns in an intensely personal feud in the wake of Money in the Bank, where he cost the juggernaut the opportunity to win the briefcase and earn a shot at the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
Determined not to allow Reigns to become the face of WWE's future, Wyatt has done everything from target the second-generation star's daughter to costing him wins in high-profile matches.
Reigns achieved a measure of payback on the July 13 episode of Raw, pummeling his rival around ringside and making it known that he will not sit back and allow his tormentor to ruin his life.
Sunday night, they meet in a match that has the potential to be a wild, chaotic match that steals the show.
Best Finish
No one likes a cheap disqualification finish, especially in a pay-per-view setting where issues are meant to be settled once and for all. With that said, if any match on the card needs that sort of screwy ending, it is Reigns and Wyatt, especially if the feud is to continue into the future.
Wyatt cannot be considered a legitimate threat to Reigns if he loses Sunday night. The feud is effectively over at that point, even if WWE Creative was to try and stretch it out to SummerSlam.
A DQ finish as Reigns and Wyatt brawl around the squared circle, maybe into the stands, leaves their issues unsettled and puts more heat on the feud heading into the biggest event of the summer.
WWE World Heavyweight Championship Match: Brock Lesnar vs. Seth Rollins
6 of 6
The main event of Battleground is a match almost a year in the making.
Dating back to last September's Night of Champions pay-per-view, the issues between Seth Rollins and Brock Lesnar have intensified with every passing month, leading to one of the most anticipated matches of the year.
At WrestleMania, Rollins cashed in Money in the Bank and won the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Since then, he has benefited from the interference of the Authority, beating the likes of Dean Ambrose and Randy Orton in several pay-per-view main events.
Unfortunately for the Architect, Brock Lesnar's return has been coupled with his systematic dismantling of J&J Security and Kane, leaving the champion to fight his own battle on Sunday night.
Will Rollins take an involuntary trip to Suplex City, or will he do as he has promised and burn it to the ground?
Best Finish
Every story needs a beginning, a middle and an end.
Rollins' betrayal of The Shield was the beginning, his WWE World Heavyweight Championship win at WrestleMania 31 the middle and Battleground should be the end, with Rollins losing the title to the man he has evaded since this past March.
He has alienated his fellow Authority teammates, and now he must face the consequences.
Brock Lesnar is the unquestioned box-office attraction in today's WWE, and a win would set him up for a huge match at SummerSlam.
Thus, the best finish in Sunday's main event sees Lesnar put Rollins away following the F5 and re-establishing himself as the most dominant star in the industry.
