Miami Dolphins: How Can Bill Lazor Get Most out of the Offense in 2015
The 2015 Miami Dolphins offense is a unit poised to explode thanks to the talent available in its skill positions.ย
It is up to offensive coordinator Bill Lazor to get the most out of the offense through his game-planning and schemes.ย
The Dolphins face the "problem" of abundancy, featuring two running backs who can run for 1,000-plus yards, a top veteran wide receiver, two "vets" aged 23 or younger and a player who promises to be one of the top rookie receivers of 2015.ย

How to best utilize these players is the question.ย
The answers go back not just to his time as Philadelphia Eagles quarterback coach under Chip Kelly, but also from his own time as offensive coordinator at the University of Virginia.ย
Running the ball is the first place to start. Under Lazor, Virginia ran the ball by featuring two running backs in Perry Jones and Kevin Parks, who in 2011 combined in 336 attempts to run for 1,624 yards, 14 touchdowns and an average of 4.8 yards per game.ย
That system, with that number of attempts, would work well with a backfield of Lamar Miller and Jay Ajayi, provided that it's Ajayi who's Miami's third-down back.ย
Further bolstering the Dolphins offense with his pass-catching abilities out of the backfield, Ajayi possesses the qualities of a third-down back that Miller does not have, as Ajayi can pass-block well too.ย
With the receivers, Lazor has to know the strengths of each player and accentuate them, which he did last season with Mike Wallace and Jarvis Landry.ย
While there is no Wallace, there is a Wallace-type receiver in Kenny Stills. Stills will serve as Miami's deep threat; he had a deep-pass catch rate of 64.3 percent in 14 attempts in 2014.ย
Stills and Ajayi can also be used in screen passes, which the Dolphins didn't run many of in 2013. When they did it was with Mike Wallace, but Miami will have other options in 2015 besides Stills and Ajayi, as DeVante Parker can be used in that capacity as well.ย
Parker has the potential to be Miami's most versatile receiver. At Louisville, the Cardinals had Parker catching screens as well as running a full professional route tree. If Lazor has similar plans in store for Parker, expect him to be very productive.ย
As Parker develops and becomes worthy of a double-team, this leaves the middle wide open for second-year player Jarvis Landry and veteran Greg Jennings.ย
Jennings is coming off a season that saw him targeted 92 times, catching 59 passes for 742 yards and six touchdowns. Similar numbers in this offense would be ideal, with 10 fewer targets being a goal due to the ability to spread the wealth around.ย
That wealth will also have to be spread toward Landry, who broke out in 2014 with 758 yards and five touchdowns on 84 catches. Landry was at his best after the catch, where he averaged 4.8 yards.
Finally there are the tight ends, Jordan Cameron and Dion Sims.ย

Sims' role can be similar to the one he played last season, where he served more as a blocking tight end than a receiving tight end, but could make plays when necessary. He should play with his hand down on the line and at times use that to lull the defense to sleep on him before popping up open a few yards downfield.ย
Cameron should be used in a style similar to Jimmy Graham, lined up all over the field. The Cleveland Brpwns used him like this during his 2013 Pro Bowl season.ย
Ultimately, the buck stops with quarterback Ryan Tannehill.ย
Tannehill had his best season in 2014, and he hopes to improve in 2015. This should be done with everything stated above, plus his use in the read-option, where he ran for 311 yards and a touchdown on 56 attempts.ย
If the offensive line stays healthy, all of this can be done, and the Dolphins will have one of the best offenses in the NFL in 2015.ย
