WWE SmackDown Spoilers: Complete Results and Analysis for July 16
Just days before the Battleground 2015 pay-per-view, WWE rolled into Birmingham, Alabama, for Tuesday night's SmackDown taping.
Roman Reigns has been tormented at the hands of Bray Wyatt for a month now, his opportunity to win Money in the Bank dashed by The Reaper of Souls and his family threatened by The New Face of Fear.
Monday night, he earned a measure of revenge by dismantling Wyatt and sending him scurrying to safety. What would await the juggernaut and his hated rival when they entered the same arena Tuesday night?
Reigns would have to focus his attention elsewhere on the night's main event, though, as he partnered with Dean Ambrose to battle Big Show and Sheamus.
Would he be able to pick up a huge tag team victory, or would the threat of Wyatt hang too heavy overhead, leading to a disappointing loss just days ahead of one of the most anticipated matches at Battleground?
Fans who attended Tuesday's taping already know the answers, but now, thanks to our friends at WrestlingInc, you can too.
Venue
Legacy Arena at The BJCC in Birmingham, Alabama
Broadcast Team
Tom Phillips, Jerry Lawler and Jimmy Uso
Results
- Bray Wyatt kicked off the show with a promo. Roman Reigns interrupted on the screen, not unlike Wyatt would typically do. He claimed that Wyatt ran Monday night but won't have that option at Battleground.
- The New Day defeated Lucha Dragons. The Prime Time Players were on commentary.
- King Barrett defeated Jack Swagger. R-Truth cut a post-match promo about their bout Sunday night.
- Cesaro defeated Rusev.
- Neville defeated Stardust.
- Naomi, Tamina and Sasha Banks cut a backstage promo revealing that they will be known as Team BAD (short for Best at Dominating).
- Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns defeated Big Show and Sheamus by disqualification when Bray Wyatt came from underneath the ring to interfere. Show put Ambrose through an announce table at one point, but the babyfaces still managed to clear the ring to close out the show.

Analysis
Cesaro and Rusev stole the show Monday night as two-thirds of a spectacular Triple Threat match. Their efforts did not go unnoticed by management, who looked forward to replicating the near-classic Raw match with a one-on-one rematch on SmackDown.
After dropping the bout to The Bulgarian Brute Monday night, Cesaro picked up a win that not only evened their series at one apiece but also proved that the company may be serious about their latest push of The Swiss Superman.
Whether that earns him and Rusev a spot on the Battleground card remains to be seen, but with no formal announcement made, they may both miss the big pay-per-view event.
The biggest story of Tuesday's taping was the furthering of the Roman Reigns-Bray Wyatt angle, which dominated the show and the final hype before Sunday's extravaganza. What unfolded was hardly original, but, at least at first glance, it adds some heat to a program that had gained considerable momentum coming out of Raw.
Why the opponents were Big Show and Sheamus, both of whom have nothing to do with Reigns, Ambrose or any of their ongoing feuds, is a question destined to go unanswered.
The lack of follow-up to Monday's epic debut of the NXT Divas, outside of the revelation of Sasha Banks, Naomi and Tamina's new group name, is a missed opportunity.
Luckily, the hype and excitement regarding their debuts is likely to carry over to Battleground and into Raw.
