John Cena Mocks CM Punk's Pipebomb Promo After DQ Loss to Ron Killings
WWE Undisputed champion John Cena mocked CM Punk's infamous pipebomb promo 14 years after the original on Friday at SmackDown.
To set the scene, Friday's main event featured Ron "R-Truth" Killings facing Cena. However, that ended up being a sidebar.
That confrontation was a brief match whose ending sequence began when Cena began walking away from the ring with the Undisputed Championship title belt in hand.
That didn't sit well with Truth, who wanted to keep fighting. But Cena did not, and he struck Truth with the championship belt, knocking him out and ending the match.
However, the night took a major turn when CM Punk, Cena's opponent at Night of Champions, came out to attack the champ. Cena got the upper hand, though, setting up a table and slamming Punk through it via an Attitude Adjustment.
And with Punk lying injured in the ring, Cena did his own version of Punk's pipebomb promo that he was the subject of nearly a decade-and-a-half ago.
During that promo, Cena called Truth "the biggest bulls--tter in the world." He also looked right into the camera and talked about "breaking the fourth wall," something Punk himself did as an injured Cena sat in the ring.
In addition, Cena told Punk that he wasn't the "voice of the voiceless."
"You’re a millionaire!" Cena explained. "You’re a capitalist! You’re not against TKO, you’re Mr. TKO!"
Other pointed insults included the champ saying that Punk changes his values more than Cena changes his T-shirts. He also called Punk a "loud-mouth opportunist who will step on the necks of people who actually work hard if it gets you ahead." Cena then looked into another camera and mentioned Claudio Castagnoli, Nic Nemeth (Dolph Ziggler) and Matt Cardona (Zack Ryder) as examples of that notion.
Speaking of which, Cardona had a response to Cena's words.
Friday's bout was a rematch of Truth and Cena's encounter at Saturday Night's Main Event last month, but few could have predicted it would come to pass even a few short weeks ago.
Truth continued to support Cena after his shocking heel turn, but when Cena hit Truth with an Attitude Adjustment through a table during the post-show press conference after Backlash, he changed his tune.
The budding rivalry led to a match at Saturday Night's Main Event, which Cena won after illegally using his title belt while the referee's back was turned.
Truth lost to JC Mateo on SmackDown the following week, and just two days after that, he surprisingly announced he had been released from WWE, ending a stint with WWE that began in 2008.
In the days that followed, Truth received an outpouring of support from fans on social media and at WWE events with many of them chanting his name.
At Money in the Bank, Cena teamed with Logan Paul against Cody Rhodes and Jey Uso in the main event. During the latter stages of the match, a masked assailant dressed in all black entered the ring and attacked Cena.
The mystery person removed their mask and revealed their identity as R-Truth, leading to a raucous reaction from the crowd. Rhodes then took advantage by hitting Cena with Cross Rhodes and pinning him for the win.
On the ensuing episode of Raw, Truth explained his return, crediting the fans for facilitating it. He also announced his intention to go by his real name, Ron Killings, and ended the segment by cutting his hair.
Last week on SmackDown, Truth attacked Cena from behind twice and even locked him in his own STF submission hold.
Truth was out for revenge on this week's SmackDown. While he technically defeated the champ, he didn't get it as Cena knocked him out and then delivered a pointed message to CM Punk ahead of Night of Champions on June 28.
