Most Likely Backlash Heel/Face Turns 🎭
Former AEW women's world champion Mariah May made her surprise WWE debut during Tuesday night's episode of NXT by confronting NXT women's champion Jacy Jayne.
May was not mentioned by name when the announce team discussed her, and there is reportedly a specific reason for that.
According to WrestleVotes, May "will be getting a new name once it's decided upon."
The revelation doesn't come as much of a shock since WWE often changes the names of wrestlers after signing them. That was the case earlier this year when former AEW star Ricky Starks signed with the company and became Ricky Saints.
It was also reported by Fightful Select (h/t Steve Carrier of Ringside News) that May signed a multiyear contract with WWE following her AEW departure.
Fightful added that WWE kept May's debut a closely guarded secret by not handing out scripts until just before the show went live.
May, 26, made a name for herself with Stardom in Japan before signing with AEW in 2023. She was quickly thrust into the spotlight as part of a storyline with Toni Storm, who was the AEW women's world champion at the time.
After starting off as Storm's friend, she eventually turned on her, and they proceeded to clash in arguably one of the best feuds ever produced by AEW.
May disappeared from AEW programming following her loss to Storm at Revolution in March, and now she has a chance to quickly establish herself as the top dog in NXT's women's division.
R-Truth Reportedly Turned Down 'Lowball' WWE Contract Offer
A report emerged this week that WWE may have made a half-hearted attempt at retaining R-Truth prior to the announcement of his departure on Sunday.
Speaking Tuesday on Coach & Bro (h/t Carrier), former WWE commentator Jonathan Coachman relayed information he was given about WWE making a contract offer to Truth:
“I should put this out there—because I had somebody reach out to me. And reportedly, and I have not confirmed this, but reportedly they did offer R-Truth a contract that was far less money than what he was making, and he decided to turn that down. That’s what somebody told me that’s in the know. Now whether or not that’s true, I’m not sure."
Truth shocked the wrestling world Sunday when he posted on X that his time with WWE was coming to an end:
While Truth worded it as though he had been released from his contract, Fightful's Sean Ross Sapp reported that Truth would be leaving WWE following the expiration of his deal.
Truth, 53, was one of the longest-tenured Superstars on the WWE roster, having been with the company since 2008.
He also had a run with WWE from 1999 to 2001 under the name K-Kwik, but after his release from the company, he signed with TNA and re-invented himself, holding the NWA World Heavyweight Championship twice during his five-year run with the promotion.
Truth spent some time as a serious character after returning to WWE, but he eventually settled into a role he excelled in, that being a comedic babyface who was loved by the vast majority of wrestling fans.
Although his WWE departure was a shock, Truth went out on a high note, as one of his final matches was against John Cena on Saturday Night's Main Event.
It is unclear if Truth plans to continue wrestling elsewhere, but a WWE Hall of Fame induction is likely in the cards for him at some point in the future.
Logan Paul Expressed Interest in Match vs. Bad Bunny
Logan Paul expressed interest this week in having a match against one of WWE's other major celebrity-turned-wrestler success stories.
On the latest episode of his Impaulsive podcast (h/t Carrier), Paul was asked who would win a wrestling match between himself and superstar musician Bad Bunny:
Paul brushed off the question, suggesting that he would easily beat Bad Bunny by saying: "What? Bad Bunny is a global music superstar … but this is my full-time job, bro. I wrestle wrestlers. I'm just gonna put it like that, bro."
The former United States champion then appealed to WWE Hall of Famer and WWE head of creative Triple H, saying: "Triple H—make it happen."
Paul made his in-ring debut back at WrestleMania 38 in 2022, and he has thrived in WWE ever since, holding the U.S. title for a time and competing in several high-profile bouts.
Bad Bunny had his first true match one year earlier at WrestleMania 37, and about two years later, he competed in his most memorable contest, beating Damian Priest in a street fight in his home country of Puerto Rico.
While Bad Bunny has only had a handful of matches because of his music commitments, he has impressed every time he has stepped inside the ring, so there would undoubtedly be plenty of interest in a Paul vs. Bad Bunny match from WWE and from a mainstream perspective.
Bad Bunny has not had a match in over two years, but something as significant as a match against Paul could conceivably be a good way to convince him to return to the squared circle at some point.
Until then, Paul is occupied with a major storyline of his own, as he is set to team with WWE champion John Cena against Cody Rhodes and world heavyweight champion Jey Uso at Money in the Bank on Saturday.
