Backstage WWE Rumors on CM Punk vs. John Cena, Travis Scott, Gunther and More
The pro wrestling rumor mill continues to churn out the latest on the biggest and brightest stars in the industry, with WWE dominating the headlines this week.
What did the top insiders have to say about a potential John Cena-CM Punk match, a return to WWE programming for rapper Travis Scott, a potential high-profile spot for Gunther, and the expected return of the Evolution premium live event?
Dive deeper into each topic with this collection of rumors and backstage reports.
WWE Planning Punk vs. Cena
1 of 4
Mike Johnson of PWInsider Elite reported that, while it isn't expected to take place at Money in the Bank on June 7, WWE is planning to run John Cena vs. CM Punk this year "when the time is right."
The time would be most right at the MITB premium live event, where Punk and Cena delivered their best and most important match in 2011.
Still, the Punk rivalry is one of the best of Cena's career and with him saying goodbye to the industry in December, one last dance with one of his greatest opponents only makes sense.
The question is whether it will be for the Undisputed WWE Championship. Depending on the timing, and where it falls in Cena's current narrative, that may not be an option.
As long as the match happens, though, the WWE fans are likely to overlook it and be happy the contest exists at all.
Travis Scott Update

Johnson also reported that WWE officials believe rapper Travis Scott will be available to work Money in the Bank, potentially setting the table for a tag match that pits him and Cena against two opponents.
Scott has been training off and on with Booker T at his school in Houston for a potential in-ring appearance.
Whether you want to see it or not, it's a logical next step for one of the most streamed musicians in the world and someone whose presence has been felt more than once this year.
A match that involves Cody Rhodes, given he has confronted The American Nightmare twice, would make the most sense.
Whether he receives that "receipt" for the hard slap to the face that bruised Rhodes' eye and left him with a busted ear drum, remains to be seen.
Latest on Gunther, World Title and Goldberg
3 of 4
During a Q&A as part of Sportskeeda's WrestleBinge, WrestleVotes reported the reason Gunther is challenging for the World Heavyweight Championship on the June 9 episode of WWE Raw instead of Money in the Bank is to get him off the PLE card while also setting him up for something big on Raw.
It is believed the "big" development is Goldberg's retirement match at Night of Champions in Saudi Arabia on June 28.
If so, it is a big spot for The Ring General, who is remaining busy in high-profle matches against huge mainstream and crossover stars. It is an indication of the trust Triple H and WWE officials have in him and proof that he is viewed as one of the elite stars in the company.
He worked his magic against Pat McAfee at Backlash and if there is any wrestler on the roster uniquely suited to deliver a quality match with Goldberg in the WCW icon's final bout, it is Gunther.
WWE Evolution Update
4 of 4
WrestleVotes also reported that WWE plans to have a bigger lineup than usual if and when it presents the second Evolution PLE this year.
They noted the card will feature "upwards of seven, potentially eight matches and a battle royal to make sure everybody makes the card."
As it should.
The women's division has waited six years for the opportunity to prove itself on a big stage, without being sandwiched in between men's matches. The original Evolution PLE was an experiment that, while critically acclaimed, struggled to gain traction with fans.
Now that women's wrestling has a bigger role on WWE programming, and one of the deepest rosters ever across three brands, it makes sense to strike while the company is hot and deliver a show that rewards the hard work and dedication of the Superstars on the roster.
The original event was headlined by a Last Woman Standing m atch between Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair for the SmackDown Women's Championship while Ronda Rousey defended the Raw title against Nikki Bella in the main event.
