Seth Rollins Is Perfect Jey Uso Feud, New Star's Rough Start, More WWE Raw Takes
Jey Uso showed why he is a fighting champion on the May 5 edition of WWE Raw on Netflix, putting the World Heavyweight Championship on the line in the CHI Health Center in Omaha, Nebraska.
Seth Rollins talked his way into a title shot and almost took the title from Uso, but CM Punk and Sami Zayn got involved to cause a disqualification.
Pat McAfee questioned if Gunther might have gone soft after his loss at WrestleMania 41. The Ring General warned him that he would regret taking a match with him at Backlash on Saturday.
Iyo Sky overcame the impressive threat of Roxanne Perez but was taken down after the match by the combination of The Prodigy and Giulia.
Grayson Waller gave up his match on Raw to Austin Theory, leading to his teammate taking a beatdown from a returning Sheamus.
This was a solid go-home show, setting the stage for Backlash and furthering more of Raw's key angles.
Seth Rollins Is Perfect SummerSlam Rival for Jey Uso
1 of 4Jey Uso has received criticism in his rise to the World Heavyweight Championship that he cannot compete on a main event level.
Against Seth Rollins, Uso looked as good as he ever has, though this was hardly a surprise given he has delivered previously against The Visionary.
This preview on Raw should set the stage for one of the top contests at SummerSlam, once Jey has successfully defended his title against Logan Paul.
The chemistry is obvious. Rollins has the most interesting character and story of anyone on Raw.
There is no other answer in order to keep Uso a top name on Raw for the entire summer.
The only concern for the champion is that Rollins is likely to win the gold when they collide again, so it's important WWE gives him memorable wins before SummerSlam.
Time for Austin Theory Face Turn
2 of 4
Austin Theory has barely made an impact for the past couple years. While he and Grayson Waller have delivered some fun moments, they have stayed in a forgettable place on the card.
The inevitable break-up looms for A-Town Down Under, and it should happen soon, with Waller remaining as a heel while Theory turns babyface.
This is a valuable opportunity to test what Theory can do in a fresh spot, possibly getting over as the man who just wanted a friend.
Waller has the best chance to rise up the ranks as a solo villain, though he will need stronger booking to become a championship contender.
This split will help both men as long as they are ready to take advantage of greater opportunities in the near future.
It could also serve WWE well particularly as a final test for Theory's upside. If he does not get over in the summer, he may run out of chances.
Giulia in Danger of Losing Credibility
3 of 4
Giulia arrived in NXT as a destructive force who could defeat anyone in her way. While she faced some setbacks, her run with the brand mostly sold her as a top star.
Her quick rise to the main roster could be out of necessity, but it has a chance to solidify her status or quickly throw her into the background.
Since Giulia aligned with Roxanne Perez, though, The Prodigy has lost in back-to-back weeks while the two lost together in NXT to Iyo Sky and Jordynne Grace.
These repeat losses are understandable since they are immediately feuding with the top two women on Raw: Iyo Sky and Rhea Ripley.
However, no talent can become main event mainstays through a series of losses. It is important that WWE finds a way to protect Giulia.
If the goal is to set up the 31-year-old as a future contender against The Genius of the Sky, she will need victories that sell why she can take that step.
Perez will likely take the pin in the tag team match next week against Sky and Ripley, but The Beautiful Madness must start picking up wins on her own afterward.
Gunther Faces Big Test at Backlash
4 of 4
Pat McAfee is not a newcomer to the squared circle. He wrestled his first match for WWE on August 22, 2020.
However, outside of his two outstanding performances in NXT that year, his contests have been more spectacle than great in-ring work.
McAfee is a celebrity in various media who WWE happens to work with as a commentator and occasional performer. He is not expected to deliver at a high level.
Gunther, however, is always expected to deliver in the ring. He is one of the best in WWE today and ran with the World Heavyweight Championship for a reason.
His loss to Jey Uso at WrestleMania 41 could be seen as the end of his time on the top, but his clash with McAfee at Backlash presents a unique opportunity.
The Ring General is often known as a hard-hitting performer who is a test even for seasoned professionals.
Against the former NFL punter, though, he will be expected to work a more careful style and maximize his minutes. If he can prove he can work this type of celebrity showcase, he may get more opportunities like this.
While he is out of the title scene, this is the right way to keep Gunther strong. He just needs to show he can make the most of this spot over other reliable veterans.
