Gerald Green to Heat: Latest Contract Details, Comments, and Reaction

The Miami Heat strengthened their bench in a major way Wednesday as they agreed to a deal with free-agent shooting guard Gerald Green.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports, the 29-year-old veteran inked a one-year contract to provide support to starting guards Dwyane Wade and Goran Dragic.

The Heat made things official later Thursday evening.

Green will join his eighth team in nine NBA seasons, but there is little doubt that the former first-round pick has established himself as a valuable source of offense off the bench over the past couple seasons.

He enjoyed two of his most productive years with the Phoenix Suns, including a 2014-15 campaign that saw him average nearly 12 points per game and shoot 35 percent from beyond the arc. That came after a career-best 2013-14 season in which he put up almost 16 points per contest.

Green, who won the 2007 NBA Slam Dunk Contest, has an excellent three-point stroke and a great deal of athleticism, which allows him to make plays above the rim.

The Heat were already enjoying an excellent offseason as they re-signed both D-Wade and Dragic after selecting forward Justise Winslow out of Duke in the first round of the NBA draft. Provided Chris Bosh returns to full health after dealing with blood clots this past season, the Heat have a legitimate chance to contend in the Eastern Conference.

Green gives them the depth they need to compete with the likes of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Chicago Bulls. He won't necessarily make or break Miami's 2015-16 campaign, but with Wade needing intermittent rest in order to remain healthy for the playoffs, he figures to play a fairly significant role for his new team.
