WWE released Rusev in April 2020, including him in the wave of cuts that typically follow WrestleMania.

The 39-year-old debuted that fall with AEW, sporting both a new look and a new name (Miro). His wife, CJ Perry, was briefly with the company as well.
The peak of Miro's run came in May 2021, when he beat Darby Allin to become the TNT champion. It was his lone title triumph with the promotion.
Thanks in part to various injuries, Miro was unable to sustain any momentum in AEW, and his deal with WWE comes more than a year after his last televised match in the U.S. He beat Andrade El Idolo at Worlds End in December 2023.
The Bulgarian powerhouse built a reasonably strong following while competing as Rusev. His supporters long argued WWE was failing to properly utilize his obvious skills.
Now, the company will get another shot. His first appearance back on Raw or SmackDown will probably be a big moment. The hard part will be carving out a regular role that helps him sustain that momentum.
