Jey Uso vs. Gunther and WWE WrestleMania 2025 Matches That'll Exceed Expectations

Erik BeastonMar 31, 2025

WWE rolls into Las Vegas on April 19 and 20 for WrestleMania 41, the biggest show of the year and the conclusion of several high-stakes rivalries featuring the top Superstars in the company.

Despite a jam-packed card and two consecutive preceding editions of the annual spectacular that have far exceeded expectations, there is still a certain hesitance from fans entering the 2025, with some matches not exactly lighting their worlds on fire.

What are those matches and why should fans have more faith in them for the finished product that they will ultimately be?

Find out with this preview of the Showcase of the Immortals.

World Heavyweight Championship Match: Jey Uso vs. Gunther

Monday Night RAW

There is a prevailing opinion among internet wrestling fans that Uso is little more than a catchphrase and entrance at this point; that he is not a worker deserving of his place in a marquee match for the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania. They forget about the three previous matches with the current champion, Gunther, and his summertime show-stealer against Ilja Dragunov.

They ignore the Intercontinental Championship matches against Bron Breakker and the world title match-up against Damian Priest at last year's Backlash premium live event.

All different opponents, all of different styles. Going back even further, there were the two matches with Roman Reigns that helped establish The Bloodline story.

Uso has a history of showing out, which earned him the singles push in the first place, and should not be judged by an under-performing match against his brother, Jimmy, and last year's Showcase of the Immortals. If those aforementioned examples of Uso's ability aren't enough to sway doubters of this year's world title match, the classics Gunther has delivered on the grand stage should be.

In his two WrestleMania appearances since joining the main roster, Gunther has delivered two Match of the Year candidates. First, he successfully defended the Intercontinental Championship against Sheamus and Drew McIntyre that was recently named to the list of the 50 Greatest WrestleMania Matches Ever. Then, he saw his 666-day reign as champion come to an end in an emotionally fueled match with Sami Zayn at last year's extravaganza.

With a red-hot crowd and a story pitting a proud defender of the mat against a charismatic Superstar with the WWE Universe behind him, Gunther and Uso should take fans on a roller coaster ride full of dramatic near-falls and, potential, one of the most memorable title changes in recent WWE history.

WWE Women's Championship Match: Tiffany Stratton vs. Charlotte Flair

Tiffany Stratton enters this year's event as the WWE women's champion, one year after missing the show completely. A young breakout star over the last 12 months, the road to WrestleMania 41 has been one paved with scrutiny from fans who believe she is not ready for the moment or that she is an unfinished product getting ready to share the stage with a measuring stick in Charlotte Flair.

On the mic, she has struggled to reach The Queen's level, often appearing to be a step or so behind Flair. She has not always come off as believable and more times than not, has appeared nervous or unsure. The results have created questions about her ability to hang with one of the most celebrated and decorated performers of this generation and tempered expectations for the title match as a whole.

Unnecessarily so.

Stratton is where she is as champion because she spent the last 12 months showing out when the opportunities presented themselves. Show-stealing performances at last year's Elimination Chamber and Backlash earned her the trust of management and support of fans that led her to the Money in the Bank briefcase. Her continued growth and evolution as a character during her partnership with Nia Jax eventually netted her the women's title.

Yes, this run to WrestleMania has been one full of apparent nerves, but the former gymnast has consistently overcome them to turn in matches and moments that have helped earn her way to this moment.

And if that is not enough to convince skeptics, the fact that she will share the ring with a competitor who has a handful of epic WrestleMania matches and moments to her name should.

Flair has competed in the biggest, most historically significant matches in the event's history, including the first-ever women's main event back in 2019. Her last appearance on the grand stage saw her battle Rhea Ripley in a losing effort in a Match of the Year candidate.

If there is one performer fans should expect greatness from, it is Flair and should Stratton hold up her end of the deal come April 19 or 20, there is reason to believe their match may be one of the bigger surprises of WrestleMania season.

CM Punk vs. Seth Rollins vs. Roman Reigns

CM Punk, Seth Rollins, and Roman Reigns are three of the greatest Superstars in WWE history, each responsible for their fair share of defining matches and moments so absolutely no one should be surprised if their Triple Threat Match ends up stealing the show during WrestleMania weekend.

There is, though, an underlying sense that there is no reason for the three-way match-up to exist; that the match is the product of WWE combining a number of feuds into one contest in order to give all three industry icons something of significance to do.

While there is a certain validity to that argument, and it would be somewhat understandable for expectations to be relatively low from an overall excitement level, there is still plenty to be excited about here.

Punk and Reigns have not squared off in a non-Royal Rumble setting since January 13, 2014. They have had plenty to say about each other in interviews, and fans, saw them share the ring as reluctant teammates, but they have not been opponents since the heyday of The Shield.

Speaking of The Hounds of Justice, the rivalry between Rollins and Reigns is one of such rich history and complicated layers that it keeps giving. Last year, Rollins sacrificed himself to provide the distraction that Cody Rhodes needed to defeat Reigns and end his historic run as WWE champion.

Add to that the disdain that exists between Punk and Rollins, stemming from real life beef, and the mystery surrounding the favor that Paul Heyman owes Punk stemming from his agreeing to be The OG Bloodline's final partner in War Games, and you have a match that is rich with story and intrigue.

Even if the most vocal of fans consider the Triple Threat stipulation a cop-out.
