WWE Tough Enough 2015: Recap, Reaction and Elimination from July 7
With another week comes another elimination from the group of hopefuls on WWE Tough Enough. After Tuesday's show, we are now down to the top 10 competitors, and things will only get more intense from this point forward.
As we saw with Hank and Alex, sometimes the way you are perceived can be what gets you kicked off the show more than what you are actually capable of.
This week's episodes of Tough Enough and Tough Talk really focused on the drama between the competitors while the actual competition took a backseat.
Third Week's Challenges
This week was all about character. Not the kind of character that defines you as a person, but the kind that makes a successful gimmick.
Seth Rollins was brought in to talk to everyone about what it takes to have a successful personality in this business, and he made sure to bring his WWE World Heavyweight Championship with him to remind everyone that he knows a thing or two about being a successful character.
Billy Gunn had a hat filled with different character concepts and each person had to pick a card. They were given an hour to select outfits and props to fit their gimmick before they would have to present themselves as their characters to the trainers. Here is a list of what each person picked.
- ZZ was the American hero.
- Gabi was the farmer's daughter.
- Sara Lee was the Queen of mean.
- Josh was the British brawler.
- Daria was the fallen angel.
- Tanner was the stud muffin.
- Patrick was the evil intellect.
- Amanda was the Barbie doll.
- Mada was the King of the ring.
- Giorgia was the bitch boss.
Every contestant seemed to have something negative to say about everyone else's portrayal of their character, with the exception of Mada. It seemed like everyone was impressed by his Pharaoh character.
Patrick won the competition, which was a little weird since the judges critiqued him while he was in the ring and didn't seem too impressed at the time.
There was no second competition this week, which may have been intentional or it might have been cut due to time constraints.
It seemed like a lot of attention was put on the tension inside the barracks, so it's possible producers are trying to focus on the reality aspect of the show more than the competition portions, which is a huge mistake when you are trying to find the next WWE Superstar.
Meanwhile, Back at the Barracks
The show initially started with some footage from last week after Alex was eliminated. Dianna called her fiance and told him she wanted to leave the competition, so she packed her bags and left the competition.
Seeing as she was getting the most criticism from her follow competitors, it doesn't come as a big surprise that she opted to eliminate herself. It didn't seem like anyone was going to miss her.
Chris Jericho asked the judges what they thought of her exit, and none of them looked like they were going to shed a tear for her. Hulk Hogan even said he was sorry they didn't have the chance to vote her off the show.
ZZ showed some frustration at nobody understanding his gimmick after the character challenge, but it never turned into a full-blown argument like previous conversations we have seen on the show.
However, Patrick and Tanner had another confrontation that turned physical. Josh got in the middle of them and broke things up, but clearly the damage to their egos had already been done. Daniel Bryan called it the worst fight he had ever seen.
Week 3 Elimination: Daria
When it came time to name the bottom three, Bryan looked like he had the hardest time making his decision. It has to be hard telling someone you don't think they are good enough to live their dream, so it's understandable that he would be conflicted.
He ended up picking Daria because she didn't do well in the gimmick challenge. Paige voted in Sara Lee once again, and said she would keep picking her until she started to stand out.
Hogan put ZZ on the chopping block, so it looks like his laid back personality and lack of physical conditioning are starting to catch up with him.
Each person wore the costume they had chosen for their character to the elimination so they could have a second chance to perform their ring entrance.
ZZ tried to use the crowd to his advantage by making people laugh, but the judges didn't seem too impressed. Sara the sweetheart failed to look any meaner, but Daria made a better impression with her second attempt at an entrance.
Each person was given the usual 30 seconds to plead their case. Unlike previous weeks, this took place before the voting opened, which was much better than doing it right before we found out who was going home.
Most of the other contestants felt that Sara Lee should be eliminated, but when the votes were tallied, Daria was the one voted to leave by the WWE Universe. She looked absolutely stunned by the decision, but managed to hold it together when talking about it.
Tough Talk
For the second week in a row, Daniel Bryan said he felt bad about putting the person who ended up going home in the bottom three. He said she probably has a future in WWE if she keeps working hard.
The Miz did a little pot-stirring between Gabi and Daria by making them acknowledge the beef they had with each other. Amanda was eventually brought into the argument and it turned into an episode of The Jerry Springer Show very quickly.
ZZ helped lighten the mood a little bit with a joke, but these women clearly will not be forming a tag team anytime soon. Daria and Amanda had a tug-o-war over the mic at one point, so The Miz was forced to make them step back and change the subject.
"To all those who believe I'm lying! I'M THE ONLY ONE WATCHING #WWETokyo #WWEJapan #BeastInTheEast pic.twitter.com/cj9wV6fAx6

"#ToughTalk: So why is everyone hatin' on @ToughSara? #ToughEnough http://t.co/XXPGrEHxo7
— WWE Network (@WWENetwork) July 8, 2015"
When the question was brought up as to who woke up to watch the Beast in the East special from Japan, Patrick was the only person who raised his hand. Paige put everyone in their place and threatened to slap anyone who didn't watch the special live on the WWE Network.
Patrick and Tanner's little brawl was brought up. but it nothing was actually settled between the two. Paige told Patrick to take the advice he gave to the women and kiss and make up, and Tanner leaned in for a smooch, but Patrick was having none of it.
Tanner finally brought up that Patrick has previous wrestling experience, something which has not been addressed until now. Patrick claimed he wasn't trying to hide his indie work, but it certainly came off that way in the first two episodes.
Once again, The Miz proved that he is the perfect host for this kind of program. Even when things were getting tense, he acted like a pro.
Interesting Tidbits
- Gabi, a Brazilian, selected farmer's daughter from the hat, which was hilarious because she is the furthest thing from a country girl.
- Sara Lee being the queen of mean was even funnier because she seems like such a sweet person in real life.
- Mada is actually Egyptian, so he made a good choice using the Pharaoh gimmick.
- Gabi is worried that everyone will focus on her now that Dianna has left the show.
- ZZ was wearing very tiny shorts for his gimmick and Sara Lee couldn't stop staring at his crotch. The judges questioned whether he had used anything to enhance himself, but we never got a clear answer.
- Sara Lee started wearing her nose ring again. Maybe she is doing it so she doesn't blend into the background.
- Why does ZZ keep staring at the ceiling when the judges are asking questions?
- They took my suggestion from last week and had the 30-second pleas take place before the voting. I will take full credit for this change in format.
Final Thoughts
To see Daria eliminated was surprising. She is definitely one of the most outspoken people on the show, but it seems like the WWE Universe was keen on keeping ZZ and Sara Lee in the competition.
Perhaps it would be better if the judges were determining who actually got to stay. Clearly ZZ's personality and Sara's cuteness are going to make them popular with fans, but this should be about who is the best, not who is the most likable.
Paige takes this competition seriously, and that was obvious when Tanner couldn't name her opponents from The Beast in the East special and she threatened to hit him with the heel of her shoe.
Too much focus is being put on the internal arguments, but this is a reality show, so we shouldn't be surprised. Hopefully the people who end up winning are the ones who deserve it.
